Guidance on selecting the coursework project
The selection of the problem for which a computerised system is to be designed and implemented is chosen by the learner (in consultation with the teacher) and should always involve a 'client' who requires a solution to the problem. The client has to be someone who is willing to be involved in the project:
· in the analysis of the problem, where the client’s requirements are obtained; this may take the form of recorded interviews with the learner
· at the software development, testing and implementation stages, where the client is involved in ‘prototyping’
· at the evaluation stage, where the client is involved in checking that the system is completed as specified and, leading on from this, is then willing to write a letter of acceptance of the system, including any criticisms of it.
In this way, learners can be encouraged to look beyond school or college life into organisations, including businesses, in their local community.
Typicalclientsmightinclude:
· The owner of a local or family business
· The secretary or president of a club or leisure society
· A teacher or other staff member in the school
· Theorganiserfor a charity
· The leader of a scientific or research group
The following list is offered as a suggestion of some suitable projects:
· Booking systems e.g. Doctor’s/Dentist’s appointments, leisure centre facilities, etc.
· Orderingandstockcontrol
· Borrowing systems e.g. Libraries, DVD rental
· Seat reservation systems for theatres, cinemas, concerts etc.
· Control systems e.g. greenhouses, air conditioning, lifts, traffic lights etc.
· Managementofclubmemberships
· Management of events e.g. school sports day
It is unlikely that a project described as 'a computer game designed for my friends' would be suitable to achieve the highest possible marks in the coursework component.
Filling out the form overleaf
In the box labelled 'Client Details' two sentences should be completed:
1. An indication of who the client is and the organisation that will be involved
2. A brief description of the specific activity that the organisation carries out (e.g. selling books, educating children aged 5-10, family restaurant, etc.)
In the box labelled 'Problem Statement' two short paragraphs should be completed:
1. A brief description of the area of the organisation that has a problem (e.g. recording book sales, providing records of examination results, ordering food for the restaurant)
2. A brief description of how a new computer program may help solve the problem
Important Note: Each learner should try to find a unique client, a client they are not sharing with another learner. If it is the case that two learners share the same client they must ensure that each of their computer solutions are addressing different problems. There is a strong risk of plagiarism (and therefore of a 'fail' result in this component) if two or more learners base their coursework on the same problem for the same client. |
