Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications
Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications was founded in 1975. It trains radio, electronic, computer, control, systems engineers. AUPET has more than 5000 students and 400 instructors, among them Doctors of Sciences, Candidates of Sciences masters of science and experienced teachers. The University has all necessary facilities for teaching including well-equipped laboratories and computer classes.. A large library with reading halls is at the disposal of the students,
There are six faculties in the University: the faculty of radio engineering, electronics and telecommunications, electric power engineering, heat power engineering, information technologies, and Correspondence faculty.
The students master such specialities as radioengineering, automated control systems, computer systems, automatic and multichannel communication, designing and manufacture of radioelectronic devices and computing.
The first year students study physics, mathematics, technical drawing, social sciences. Later they acquire profound knowledge in electronics, cybernetics, computer science, etc. Students get practical skills in different laboratories equipped with modern devices. Advanced students carry out their research under the guidance of supervisors.
The course of study lasts four years. At the end of the course the students get Bachelor’s degree. Then they can proceed to the Master’s degree and after two more years of study and research to the Doctor’s degree.
Our students take an active part in social life of the University. The most popular sports are track-and-field athletics, skiing, volley-ball a basketball.
The students live in three hostels with all modern conveniences. Beside students' rooms there are reading rooms and special recreating halls where they gather in the evening to listen to music, watch TV, dance and enjoy themselves.
. Our University provides a good engineering education in engineering, electronics, cybernetics, computer science, information technologies Our graduates always get a good job. They work at computing centres, design offices, industrial enterprises, research laboratories and institutes.
Television
The television set is one of the most important and popular electronic products of our time.
First it was demonstrated in 1939 at the World’s Fair in New York. Although the first black-and-white pictures were not very good, people were greatly interested in this new invention.
Everybody wanted to have it but only few people owned it at that time.
In a very short time television has had great influence on people’s life and way of thinking. Now people could watch the most important events, football and tennis matches direct as they occur.
TV communication is provided with the help of a system of artificial earth satellites, so that people living in different parts of the country or all over the world can watch TV programmes at the most convenient hours.
There are several types of television: cable TV, digital and HDTV or high-definition television. Cable TV is a system using wires for the transmission of television programmes. Cable TV is very popular nowadays because it makes possible to have over 100 channels of high quality.
The next major step forward in the development of TV was digital TV. In a digital system the usual continuous signal is replaced by a digital code which contains detailed information on colour, brightness and so on.
The most important stage in the development of TV is high-definition television (HDTV) or Hi-Vision.
Technically it is television of the 21-st century. The quality of pictures is excellent, crisp and without flickers. The quality of sound is also superb. Plasma display technologies make it possible to produce large, colour, flat TV screen so thin and light that you can hang it on the wall like a picture.
In conclusion I’d like to say that television is widely used in industry, medicine, space and scientific research and so on, but in time it will find even wider application.
Computers in our life
We live in an electronic world. There are a lot of electronic devices in our houses, for example, automatic washing machines, dishwashers, food processors, video recorders, television sets, mobile phones and so on.
The center of this world is a tiny silicon plate of a few square milimetres, an integrated circuit or a chip as we call it. The integrated circuit is one of the most sophisticated inventions of man, science and technology. When we speak about the integrated circuit we mean not only high quality but high speed and high technology.
The most popular electronic device is a computer. Computers can be divided into three broad categories: mainframe computers (mainframes), minicomputers (minis), and microcomputers (micros).
Mainframes are large, powerful, expensive computers that are operated by a team of professionals at the same time. The most powerful mainframes are sometimes called supercomputers.
The most common type of computer is the microcomputer. Microcomputers are sometimes called personal computers. There are two common types of personal computers. They are desktop computers andportables. Desktops are small enough to sit on an office desk and are relatively cheap. They are becoming cheaper and more powerful and are often used for running multimedia programs, i.e. programs that contain some combination of text, sound, high quality graphics, animation, and video. Multimedia computers need to have a sound facility and usually have a CD-ROM drive.
The speed of a modern computer is phenomenal. It can perform billions of operations a second. For example, the fifth generation computers are able to perform 100 billions operations a second. In the future we expect the appearance of photon computers, the operation of which will be based on light. Light has several advantages over electronics. Light beams are faster, travel in parallel lines and can pass through one another without interference.
In conclusion, I’d like to say that although electronic age is still very young it can be replaced by a new age of light. The race is going on.
