Exercise 2.41. Express the characters’ wishes or regrets in the following situations, using your knowledge of different types of subjunctive mood:
E.g. I wish I hadn’t had an argument with my wife… or
If I hadn’t had an argument with my wife…
1. Paul had an argument with his wife. He can’t control his temper. He was driving his car too fast. He had an accident. He is in hospital now. His wife won’t come and visit him. His leg hurts. The man in the next bed won’t stop talking. Paul can’t get out of bed and has to listen to all the rubbish the man says. He feels miserable and is on the verge of crying.
2. Martin didn’t lock his car when he went to the supermarket. His car was stolen. Now he is at the police station. Nobody seems to be very much concerned about him. He is being asked a lot of questions. He is annoyed and helpless. His heart is pumping and his hands are trembling. He feels like leaving, but he wants to get his car back.
3. O’Brian forged some figures in his report. Then he got frightened of his boss and wrote another report. He went to the office at night to exchange the documents. The alarm went off. O’Brian was caught by the police. His boss fired him. Now he presses charges against O’Brian. O’Brian doesn’t have enough money so he can’t have a good lawyer. He faces a long-term imprisonment.
4. Ann cleans Pr. Beams’s laboratory. She got interested in his new invention. She didn’t know the professor’s time-machine worked, so she pressed a button. Now she has to find somewhere to hide, or the dinosaurs will eat her. There are no people here and nobody can save her. She doesn’t have a gun, so she can’t defend herself. She’s hungry but she can’t find any food. If she tries to make the machine work she might get back home. She hopes to get back and promises herself she’ll never touch this machine again.
5. Thomas was not a very diligent student. He didn’t work hard during the term. So he failed to defend his term project. He was very upset. He was afraid to tell his parents about it. He wanted some miracle to happen. He found a magic wand. He made a wish to change his past. His wish came true. But his life is different now. He is not a student any more. He is a delivery-boy at a local pizzeria. His girlfriend doesn’t recognize him. Thomas wants to change his life again with the help of the wand, but he is afraid things might turn even worse.
Exercise 2.42. Come out with a fifteen-sentence-story on suggested ideas, using your knowledge of subjunctive mood:

3. If I were a cat/ a dog/ a mouse/ a cockroach/ a giraffe/ an elephant/ a panda/ a rattle-snake/ a corrida bull/ a mosquito/ an eagle/ a crocodile, etc.
4. A shopping bag/ an antique chair/ a volcano/ a BWM key/ a cactus/ a lorry/ an alarm clock/ an answering-machine/ a one-hundred-dollar bill/ a slipper/ a mirror, etc.
Exercise 2.43. Enlarge upon the given dialogues and act them out in class:
RON:Oh, Shiela, look at the view! I do wish I'd brought my camera.
SHIELA: Yes, indeed. If you had, you’d be able to take some lovely pictures.
