He wasn't there long (он не долго пробыл там). Kathleen gave up her shop (Кэтлин забросила свой магазин; to give up — бросить, отказаться) and devoted herself (и посвятила себя; to devote) to looking after him at home (уходу за ним на дому; to look after — ухаживать). But she found (но она считала: «обнаружила») that the Saturday mornings (что утро субботы) were a strain (было особенно напряженным; strain — напряжение, нагрузка). He insisted (он настаивал) on going to see me in the Portobello Road (на прогулке по Портобелло Роуд, чтобы увидеть меня) and would come back (и опять возвращался) to insist (к идее: «настаивать») that he'd murdered Needle (что он убил Иглу). Once he tried to tell her something about Matilda (однажды он попытался рассказать ей кое-что о Матильде; to try — пытаться), but Kathleen was so kind and solicitous (но Кэтлин была так добра и заботлива), I don't think (что не думаю) he had the courage (что у него хватило духа; courage — мужество, храбрость) to remember what he had to say (рассказать ей то, что он должен был сказать: «помнить, что он должен сказать»).

He wasn't there long. Kathleen gave up her shop and devoted herself to looking after him at home. But she found that the Saturday mornings were a strain. He insisted on going to see me in the Portobello Road and would come back to insist that he'd murdered Needle. Once he tried to tell her something about Matilda, but Kathleen was so kind and solicitous, I don't think he had the courage to remember what he had to say.

Skinny had always been rather reserved with George since the murder (Скинни всегда был сдержан с Джорджем с момента убийства; to reserve — запасать, откладывать). But he was kind to Kathleen (но он был добр к Кэтлин). It was he who persuaded them (именно он: «это был он, кто» убедил их; to persuade — уговаривать) to emigrate to Canada (иммигрировать в Канаду) so that George should be well out of reach of the Portobello Road (чтобы Джордж не смог добраться до Портобелло Роуд: «был хорошо далеко от досягаемости Портобелло Роуд»).

George has recovered somewhat in Canada (в Канаде Джордж немного пришел в себя; to recover — выздоравливать) but of course he will never be the old George again (но, конечно, он никогда не будет прежним: «старым» Джорджем), as Kathleen writes to Skinny (как писала Кэтлин Скинни). "That Haystack tragedy did for George (та трагедия с убийством: «со стогом сена» погубила Джорджа; to do for smb — губить, портить)," she writes (пишет она). "I feel sorrier for George sometimes (иногда мне жалко Джорджа больше) than I am for poor Needle (чем бедную Иглу). But I do often have Masses said (но я часто заказываю мессу; to say mass (for smb.'s soul) — служить обедню за упокой души) for Needle's soul (за упокой души Иглы)."

I doubt (сомневаюсь) if George will ever see (увидит ли Джордж когда-нибудь) me again in the Portobello Road (меня снова на Портобелло Роуд). He broods much (он много и печально размышляет) over the crumpled snapshot (над мятым снимком; to crumple — мять, snapshot — моментальная фотография) he took of us (где мы: «который он снял с нас») on the haystack (на стоге сена). Kathleen does not like the photograph (Кэтлин не нравится эта фотография). I don't wonder (что и не удивительно: «я не удивляюсь»). For my part (что касается меня; part — часть, сторона), I consider (я считаю; to consider — рассматривать, обдумывать) it quite a jolly snap (это довольно веселый снимок; jolly — веселый, радостный), but I don't think (но я не думаю) we were any of us (что мы, каждый из нас) so lovely as (были такими красивыми; to love — любить; lovely — красивый, очаровательный, привлекательный) we look in it (какими мы выглядим на ней), gazing blatantly (вглядывающиеся шумливо; to gaze — пристально глядеть, всматриваться; blatant — крикливый, шумный) over the ripe cornfields (в спелые поля; ripe — созревший; corn (зерно) + field (поле)). Skinny with his humorous expression (Скинни с его забавным выражением лица; humorous — юмористический, веселый; to express — выражать). I secure in my difference from the rest (я, уверенная в своей исключительности: «отличительности от других»; to secure — обеспечивать безопасность; difference — разница, различие). Kathleen with her head prettily perched on her hand (Кэтлин, ее головка очаровательно упирается в кулачок: «располагается высоко на ее руке»; pretty — милый, прелестный), each reflecting fearlessly (каждый бесстрашно показывает: «отражает»; fear — страх; to reflect — отражать) in the face of George's camera (в объектив: «лицо» фотокамеры Джорджа) the glory of the world (все великолепие мира; glory — триумф, слава, красота), as if it would never pass (как будто оно будет длится вечно: «как будто оно никогда не кончится»).

For my part, I consider it quite a jolly snap, but I don't think we were any of us so lovely as we look in it, gazing blatantly over the ripe cornfields. Skinny, with his humorous expression, I secure in my difference from the rest. Читайте в этой же книге: And before he left he told each of us anxiously, | We were there a few weeks before we began inquiring for George who was farming about four hundred miles away to the north. We had not told him of our plans. | He was not surprised that I was leaving his unit, but he hated my way of expressing it. He gave me a Presbyterian look. | I did not see George again till just before my death, five years ago. | One day in the June of that year I met Kathleen specially for lunch because she had phoned me to say she had news. | I was curious to see this version of George, but I was leaving for Scotland next day and did not see him till September of that year just before my death. | I said no, I liked an empty house. | But George got over the stile with me. | The Haystack Murder was one of the notorious crimes of that year. | I left my room and went down to complain to Frau Lublonitsch. |
