Данное учебное пособие предназначено для обучения английскому языку студентов старших курсов специальности «Мировая экономика». В пособии представлены аутентичные тексты, раскрывающие специфику современного этапа развития мировой экономики и система упражнений, позволяющих повысить уровень владения английским языком по специальности.

Цель учебного пособия – развитие и совершенствование навыков чтения, устной речи и аудирования, расширение словарного запаса, включая фразеологические обороты и идиомы, свойственные публицистическому стилю.

Дискуссионный характер отобранных тем, профессионально интересных для студентов экономических специальностей, и предлагаемые в пособии разнообразные учебные задания, дискуссии и ролевые игры направлены на формирование устойчивых умений и навыков аналитического чтения и ведения полемики на английском языке.

ПРЕДИСЛОВИЕ / INTRODUCTION

Данное учебное пособие предназначено для студентов экономического факультета, обучающихся по специальности «Мировая экономика», владеющих английским языком на уровне Upper-Intermediate (выше среднего) и Advanced (продвинутый).

Целью пособия является развитие навыков чтения, устной речи, аудирования, расширение словарного запаса, изучение и закрепление фразеологических оборотов и идиом, свойственных публицистическому стилю.

Пособие состоит из 12 разделов и приложения, содержащего полные скрипты текстов для аудирования, звучащих на прилагаемом диске, и ролевые игры. В пособии представлены для обсуждения такие актуальные темы мировой экономики как проблемы конкурентности на мировом рынке, вопросы трудовой занятости населения, защиты интеллектуальной собтвенности в бизнесе, экономические аспекты защиты окружающей среды, вопросы PR и др. В качестве основного источника для данного пособия послужили материалы известного еженедельного издания “The Economist”.

Каждый раздел включает аутентичные тексты для чтения и аудирования, активный вокабуляр, разнообразные упражнения и задания, направленные на проверку понимания текстового и аудитивного материала, активизацию лексики, развитие навыков аналитического чтения, аудирования и ведения дискуссии. Предлагаемые формы работы в парах и группах, участие в «свободных дискуссиях» и ролевых играх, в которых поднимаются профессионально значимые проблемы, способствуют эффективному формированию и развитию дискуссионных умений и навыков.

Exercise 1. Starting up:

1. Do you think that the general situation with women participation in labour force is satisfactory or there are some problems that you can dwell on?

2. Would you like to see your mother as a housewife or as a business-lady? Why?

Vocabulary and Listening

Exercise 2. You are going to listen to the report “Active Participation of Women in the Labour Force” (part 1). Study the definitions of some English phrases from the report and translate the examples into Russian:

1. labour force – all the members of a country who are able to work (America and Britain have combined high levels of female partici­pation in the labour force with a reluctance to spend public money on child care);

2. to be short of something – to be deficient or lacking in something ( The world is short of causes for celebra­tion);

3. OECD – Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (Women already make up the majority of university graduates in the OECD countries);

4. to subject somebody to something – to force somebody to experience something unpleasant for a long period of time (They were routinely subjected to casual sexism);

5. to be confined to something – to exist only in particular area or group of people (Women were largely confined to repetitive, menial jobs);

6. on average – based on a calculation about how many times something usually happens, how often people usually do something (They are also paid significantly less than men on average).

3. What are the two stings typical of women’s economic empowerment?

4. Which societies try to resist the trend of women’s active participation in the labour force?

5. Who are the biggest losers in the situation where women take an active part in the labour force?

Exercise 5. Listen to the report again and complete the following statements:
