SIW: Read the text. Are the sentences true (T) or false (F)?

a)Jamie Oliver is a famous TV presenter. ___

b)Jamie didn’t like the school dinners he saw in British schools. ___

c)Jamie believes children should learn about food and cooking. ___

d)Healthy school dinners cost more than unhealthy ones. ___

e)The government won’t change meals in British schools. ___

British chef, Jamie Oliver, is famous for his quick, healthy and interesting style of cooking. He has written many books and had his own TV programme ‘The Naked Chef’. Last year Jamie became interested in school dinners – the midday meal which children can buy at school. Jamie visited some schools in the UK and he was shocked to see children eating a lot of unhealthy food such as chips, sausages, crisps and sweets. The school dinners didn’t have any fresh fruit or vegetables in them. Jamie decided to try to change school dinners. He made a TV programme called ‘School dinners’. Jamie believes that children need to learn good habits while they’re young and that they will learn to eat healthy food if they take an interest in food and cooking. So he taught children about healthy foods, and showed them how to cook great meals. He also showed the ‘dinner ladies’ – the people who cook and serve food in schools – that they can prepare healthy meals in schools for the same money as junk food meals. He even persuaded the Prime Minister to introduce new rules about meals in British schools. This means things will have to change in all British schools – and quickly, too

Eating out in SF

Whatever food you’re looking for – an all-you-can-eat breakfast, a quick lunch, a romantic dinner – you’ find it in San Francisco. The city is home to over 4,500 restaurants and eating places. And they’re not only for tourists. On average, San Franciscans eat out 267 times a year.

You can eat food from anywhere in the world, from Afghan to Argentinian, and from Vietnamese to vegetarian. With Mexican fast food, Italian bakeries, hundreds of Thai, Chenese, Vietnamese, and Korean restaurants, and in-and-out Japanese noodle shops, it’s possible to eat your way round the world during a single San Francisco weekend.

And you don’t find good food only in expensive restaurants. You can try great cooking in any number of small eating places, where prices are low and reservations aren’t needed. Portions are often large, but you can ask the restaurant to pack up anything you don’t eat so you can take it home. But wherever you eat, if you have waiter service, don’t forget to tip. The exact amount you leave is up to you, but 15-20 per cent of the bill is normal.

An easy way to calculate your tip is to double the sales tax (currently 8.5 per cent).
