Past Simple
A. Kikki asked her father about things he did at weekends when he was a child. Read his story and complete with the verbs in the Past Simple. Think of the use.
When I 1… (be) a child, my parents always 2…(take) me to the country, to my grandparents. There I 3…(have) a lot of friends. If the weather 4…(be) fine, we usually 5…(play) in the streets, 6…(ride) a bike or 7…(play) football. In summer we 8…(spend) almost all the time near the river. 1b. Look through the information about Kikki’s father’s weekends again. Compare with your day offs when you were 10.
Example: Like her father I often rode a bike in my childhood.
2a. Last Saturday Kikki did a lot of interesting things and asked her brother to write about them. Read her diary and check whether brother’s notes are correct. Correct the mistakes as in example. Think of the use of the Past simple.

1. Kikki called Mary at 8.00.
Wrong! She didn’t call Mary at 8.00. She called her at 9.00.
2. Kikki studied for history test at 11.00.
3. Kikki played football with Peter at 10.00.
4. Kikki visited uncle Bob at 1.00.
5. Kikki wrote a letter at twelve o'clock.
6. Kikki bought cat food at one o'clock.
7. Kikki did her homework at two o'clock.
8. Kikki met Nicola at six o'clock.
9. Kikki went to the cinema at seven o'clock.
10. Kikki came back at nine o'clock.
11. Kikki ate at Leslie's house at ten o'clock.
12. Kikki went to bed at 11 o’clock.
2b. Compare your Saturday with Kikki’s. Base on her diary.
Example: I didn’t call Mary, but I called my sister.
3. S1: You are Kikki’s friend. Unfortunately you couldn’t spend Saturday with her, but you knew about some of her plans. Ask her brother about her day off. The phrases below will help you. S2: You are Kikki’s brother. Answer the questions about her day off. Use the diary from the previous exercise.
Phrases: to buy dog food, to take Cosmo to the vet, to meet Nicola, to go to the theatre, to do her homework, to eat at Stanley’s, to visit uncle Peter, to go to the birthday party.

BE/GET USED TO (DOING) STH (звикнути) is used to talk about habitual actions and means ‘be / get accustomed to’, ‘be in the habit of’, ‘to have experienced something so that it no longer seems surprising, difficult, strange etc’:
e.g. I do the dishes every day, so I' m used to it.
I’m not used to getting up early.
They are used to cald weather.
You’ll get used to her when you get to know her better.
WOULD [wυd] modal verb negative short form wouldn't (зазвичай) is used to say that something happened often or regularly in the past (often in literary style):
e.g. When we worked in the same office, we would often have coffee together.
On summer evenings they would sit out in the garden.
