Multicultural Education is the first book published in Russia which gives a comprehensive view of a complex and multidisciplinary field of multicultural education many aspects of which are new to the country and its people who after the collapse of the Soviet Union find themselves in painful search of their new socio-cultural identities. My goal was to engage teachers, university professors, students, social workers, parents and others new to this area into discussions of such topics as racism, cultural pluralism, social justice, equity and equality, ethnicity and nationality, religion and culture, sex, gender, exceptional children, social class; move them to make actions in their classrooms and workplaces to affirm diversity, and encourage them to pursue further academic inquiry and self-reflection of their personal cultural values and behaviors. Some of the multicultural issues and problems of the Soviet society were tabooed or considered to be «indecent» to be discussed in public, that is why many of them were not researched and a lot of people, especially children remain unaware how to deal with them. It is my hope that this book will stimulate thinking and dialogue among the readers, enrich their multicultural experience, and lead them to greater tolerance and respect of cultural diversity which the country so badly needs today.
