All kinds of lodging for several nights, including hotels, can be divided into several categories:

1. Hotels proper (that offer the greatest variety of services, amenities, and price ranges and tend to be situated nearer to the city centre);

2. Motels (specially designed for motorists, so having enough parking lots to accommodate all the guests who have brought their cars with them);

3. Apartment hotels (probably the cheapest type of hotels; they are small buildings with ten – twenty rooms and practically no additional services);

4. Youth hotels (the cheapest kind of temporary lodging specially designed for young people who need to find beds for the night during a short period of time; a room does not have less than six beds and often more – so that you have to live with a number of strangers);

5. Bed-and-Breakfast (reserving bed-and-breakfast in advance is practically the only way of getting it – here walk-ins are virtually impossible. They are just ordinary apartments or rooms in theses apartments that reservation agencies rent for their customers from owners. They fall into two categories: hosted apartments, a bedroom in the apartment where the host is present, and unhosted apartments, entire apartments that are temporarily vacant).

When travelling on business people almost always stay at hotels. It is advisable, therefore, to remember the following:

1. The first thing to do is to book a room in advance either by letter, telephone or telegram. Otherwise you may arrive at the hotel and be told that there are no rooms. It is neither convenient nor customary just to walk into a hotel and say that you want a room. Customers with no reservation are viewed with suspicion at all hotels. On the other hand, in many holiday resorts if you come in the period beginning in late October and ending in April (out-of-season), when all the hotels are practically empty, your just walking in and requesting a room will be quite welcome.

2. On arrival at the hotel go to the reception desk in the lobby and confirm your reservation. The clerk will then give you a registration form to fill in and sign (the form is filled in BLOCK LETTERS). In smaller hotels you simply sign the visitor’s book and give your permanent address.

3. At large hotels you may ask any service by telephone. You tell the operator if you wished to be called at certain time, you call room service when you want a meal or drinks sent up to your room, valet or maid service if you need something (a suit or dress cleaned or pressed).

4. Let the hotel management know well in advance the day and time of your departure.
