New Zealand is an island nation in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. It comprises two main landmasses: the North Island and the South Island. New Zealand is notable for its geographic isolation. It is situated about 2,000 km southeast of Australia across the Tasma Sea. Its closest neighbours to the north are New Caledonia, Fiji and Tonga.
New Zealand is an independent parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy. The Head of state is Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. She is represented in the country by a governor-general. The executive head of the government is the prime minister, who is the leader of the major party.
The capital of New Zealand is Wellington. The largest city is Auckland. There are three official languages in the country: English (98%). Maori (4.2%), New Zealand Sign Language (0.6%).
New Zealand has a population of about 4.2 million people. 78 % of New Zealanders identify with European ethnic groups. Among them one can meet: the British, the Irish, the Dutch, the Dalmatian, the Italian, and the German. New Zealanders informally call themselves Kiwi or Kiwis.
New Zealand is also a predominantly urban country. 72.2 % of the population live in 16 main urban areas. The rest of the population lives in the four largest cities of Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch.
