- to be liable to duty/duty free — подлежать/не подлежать обложе­нию пошлиной. Прилагательные, заканчивающиеся на free, могут переводиться как лишенные того или иного качества. Сравните: frее of charge или просто alcohol-free — безалкогольный, t rou­ble-free — бесперебойный

- railway station

- time-table — 1) расписание (железнодорожное, школьное и т. д.), 2) график. Си­ноним: schedule. По-разному произ­носится в английском [Jediul] и американском [skediul] вариантах английского языка

- fare — оплата проезда (любого). Например: What is the fare to New-York? — $79 with the tax. — Сколько стоит проезд до Нью-Йорка? — 79 долларов с налогом.

- to hurry (up) — 1) опешить, торопиться; 2) подго­нять, ускорять. It would be a pity to hurry the work — Было бы жаль скомкать работу.

At the Customs

- "Hello."

- "Hello."

- "Could you tell me which channel to go through?"

- "If you've got anything to declare, you go through the red channel."

- "How do you know if I have things to declare?"

- "Are you staying in Britain for more than six months?"

- "No."

- "The amount of goods you can bring in without duty depends on where you bought them. You can have 200 cigarettes, 1 litre of spirits, 2 litres of wine and presents worth 29 pounds, if you bought them in a duty free shop or on the plane or in a country not in the EU."

- "Oh!"

- "If you bought them in an EU country, you can have 300 cigarettes, 1 and a half litres of spirits, 4 litres of wine and presents worth a hundred and twenty pounds."

- "Right. I have 1 litre of whisky and 2 litres of wine. I don't have any presents, that means I don't have anything to declare."

- "That's right. You can go through the green channel."

- "I've got 100cigarettes and a bottle of vodka. I bought it on the plane. But I bought a camera in the EU which costs 200 pounds. It's a present for my uncle."

- "You must go through the red channel."

- "Thank you."

The customs officer: Have you got anything to declare? Any spirits, wine, tobacco in excess of the duty-free allowance?

Traveller: No, I only have a bottle of vodka and these ciga­rettes.

Thecustoms officer: Have you got any presents which you intend to leave in Britain?

Traveller: Yes, I've got this camera. It costs 200 pounds. I bought it this week.

The customs officer: Have you got the receipt for this camera?

Traveller: Yes, here it is.

The customs officer: If you wait a minute, I'll tell you how much duty you must pay.

Traveller: Thanks.

1. - "Excuse me, is this the right check-in for British Air­ways?"

- "No, you've come to the wrong place. Go to the left along this passage."

- "Oh, thank you very much."

Modifications: gate for flight 125, counter for Spanish Air­ways, queue for airport bus.

2. - "Is this your luggage?"

- "Yes, it's all here."

- "Would you open this bag?"

- "All right."

Modifications: all your luggage, all you have, suitcase.
