Xiyuan) was the pleasure palace of Emperor Qianlong (1711–99), see.
Just inside the East Gate is the chief palace structure, the Hall of Benevolence and Longevity, where the emperor handled state affairs and received envoys.
Nearby, the Garden of Virtue and Harmony comprises two halls and a theatre stage. The stage is where the imperial family watched Peking opera, a favourite of Empress Cixi. From May through August it hosts free performances (usually acrobatics or traditional dance) hourly from 9am to 4pm. Theatrical costumes and props are displayed in the neighbouring pavilions.
The Long Corridor, a 728m pavilion decorated with mythical scenes, is west of here. Longevity Hill looms to the north and has most of the palace’s grand halls and temples. Further on is Cixi’s infamous marble boat, which became a symbol of the imperial family’s extravagance, and the ferry (Y8) that crosses to South Lake Island.
South Lake Island’s Hall of Embracing the Universe contains a small exhibition on Puyi, the last emperor. From here, go south to the Western Corridor (see the boxed text) or north to the Wenchang Gallery, which houses Qing artefacts, as well as jade and porcelain.
