TEXT

SUCCESS AND HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL.

Are you takers who hope life will be good

to you if you are smart enough, tough enough,

ambitious enough, and lucky enough?

OR

Are you makers who get the most of life

by giving the best you have and being the best you can be?

One question embodies myth, the other frames lasting

truth. The key is always to be able to tell the myth

from the truth in the game of life.

Nobody is against the idea of succeeding, it’s true.

What’s the purpose of living life unless one strives to be successful?

Success is not a thing to be possessed. Rather, it is the process of becoming all I can and should be. Success has little to do with money, although there is nothing wrong with being rich. Some rich people are extremely successful; others are not,

If you measure your success only by what you purchase or produce, you are doomed to dissatisfaction. There is always someone who can purchase and produce faster or better. There is always someone who is prettier, more popular, quicker, smarter and stronger.

Many of us believe that there is some kind of standard that all of us must reach if we want to be winners. Television and other media tell us life is like a big game show, and the prizes include the following:

-instant name recognition

- wealth

- constant happiness

- on-going stability and beauty.

But we cannot drink or inhale happiness. We cannot buy happiness, wear it drive it, live in it or travel to it. Happiness is the journey, not the destination. Happiness is the inner life. What good are fortune and fame, if we miss the really valuable things as love, family, friends, respect, and health?

Success is not a matter of simply earning money. But money is like a train or a plane ticket. It will take you nowhere unless you use it. Money is also like a library card. Actually, money and knowledge are very much the same. They mean nothing when you simply collect them. They mean everything when you use them, share them, and put them to work.

Success is not the problem; the problem is what success does to us. Sharing forces us to consider the needs of other people, sometimes giving up some of our own desires. In addition, the idea of being successful and being the best is based upon God-given, timeless, moral principles, which take into account spiritual and ethical values affecting all humankind and natural world.

Based on the studies of human behavior we can define three basic personality types. They are the victims, the sustainers and the dreamers.

VICTIMS are preoccupied with the past and usually concerned about things that cannot be controlled. Victims feel helpless. They tend to fix the blame on others. Millions of people actually believe that they fail because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Or perhaps their horoscope just wasn’t right that day. Furthermore, they often blame their families, saying they had “the wrong parents”. Their thought is “ Well, it could have been the worse”.

SUSTAINERS make very little progress toward future goals because they are too worried about the present. They want to keep things going smoothly, the way they always have been. By living only in the present, sustainers seldom plan for the future or learn from the past. The basic problem is fear. They love to say: “Why should I change what is working?”

Sustainers are survivors, and they are almost as plentiful in society as victims. The major goal is to make it through the week and enjoy the weekend.

DREAMERS talk a lot to explain their lack of accomplishments. They dream using their great imagination, but they never quite get into action. They never turn those dreams into goals, plans and actual activity. Dreamers live in a never-never land of made-believe dreams. They like saying “ Someday I’ll… “ and “If only…”,but someday never comes.

Many people believe that knowledge is power and that the best way to get a good job is to get a good education but few of them turn it into reality. For most young people studying is like paying taxes or going to the dentist. It is something they do not like to do and few will do it if it is not absolutely necessary. Most people believe that graduation day from college or university is the end studying for life.

It is a myth. The truth is to place much higher priority on continuing education.

HOW do you measure success?

Success is a very personal thing. It means something different to each of us.

Success in America is usually associated with material wealth, fame and social status. But it is not what you get that makes you successful, it is what you are continuing to do with what you have got.

People who play the comparison game immediately become frustrated and annoyed. When they see others who are smarter, younger or better looking, the automatic conclusion is that others are better and deserve the best. But the success

of others has little to do with personal success. True success is not measured by what other people may say about you. The happiest people in life know that they don’t compete against others. Their success comes from doing their best, based on their skills.

Instead of impressing the world, seek to do something that is beautiful, excellent and heartwarming. Real success comes in small portions day by day: a smile, a hug, a sunrise or sunset, the smell of lilacs and many other things.

Man’s rise or fall, success or failure, happiness or

unhappiness depends on his attitude, a man’s attitude will create

the situation he imagines.

James Lane Allen.
