TEXT 2

MONEY MATTERS.

Money can’t buy happiness. Money can’t buy us love. Rich people supposedly

aren’t that much happier than the poor. Wealth can never replace relationships family ties, the good feelings we get from helping others, etc. We’ve all heard this before time and time again, but let’s be realistic Though money may not be everything, in the US it really does have an effect on happiness

.

1. First of all, money brings respect and approval from others. People might say that we should not be so concerned about what others think of us, and that happiness can only come from within. Yet that’s far easier said than done.

Realistically, very few people can live happily without the approval of others. For most, it does and it will always bother us when we are looked down on, perhaps because we drive an old car or live in a small, cheap flat. True, the initial wish to buy a new car may fade away, but the car itself is a status symbol that others respect. It isn’t easy to accept being middle class or poor when richer people seem to command immediate respect and esteem, just because they are financially successful.

2. We should also bear in mind that money is a symbol of ability and achievement. If you are a talented athlete, musician, writer, business person, and so on, it is likely that your ability will bring financial rewards. But while you gain satisfaction from having your talent recognized and rewarded, it may not be the money itself which makes you happy.

3. Furthermore, money allows us to live in an environment which can promote happiness. How happy could you be living in the dangerous and dirty city environment in which poor people usually have to live? If you have money, you can live in a safe, clean and beautiful place. You’ll have good schools and parks nearby for your children and easy access to vital facilities like hospitals. How can these things not to contribute to your happiness?

4. Perhaps money cannot buy love, but a lack of money can certainly make it harder to find love. The more money you earn, the better chance you have of finding a good marriage partner. Let’s face it; if you are rich, you will have a bigger choice of partners. If you are poor, you will have fewer opportunities to find a mate. Nowadays more women are financially independent. And it is a fact that if you are a man with little money or at least show that you are likely to earn a reasonable amount of money in future, many women will not give a chance.

5. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, money allows you to provide for your children. People with money always make sure that their children live in healthy environments and get the best education possible. Poor families simply cannot compete, and their children are much more likely to fail academically. This results in fewer prospects for the future. Today education is more important than ever for survival. How would you feel if you had a bright son or daughter who could be anything he or she wanted, but who will never get the chance simply because you cannot afford to give him or her a good education?

6. Oscar Wilde, the famous Irish novelist, once said: ‘When I was young, I used to think money was important in life. Now, when being old, I know it is.”

In the United States people without money live lives filled with stress, anxiety and frustration. That’s just the way it is. Or, you can keep all your talk about money not making people happy. From where I stand, the clear conclusion to this debate is that money does indeed matter. It always has and it always will.

HOW TO BECOME A MILLIONAIRE.

1. When you think of millionaires, do you think of people wearing diamonds and driving expensive cars? Actually, the rich are far more likely to be wearing old jeans and driving an old pickup truck. They don’t try to look different from ordinary people, say authors Thomas Stanley and William Danko in their book “The Millionaire Next Door.” They surveyed America’s millionaires and found that the main secret to wealth was modest spending. ‘ Anyone can be wealthy if they make a plan, are frugal, and work hard,” says Stanley.

Here is what else they found.

2. Eighty percent of millionaires in America made their fortunes in one generation. They didn’t inherit their money from their family. Most of them own a business. Two-thirds of them are self-employed, often in blue-collar industries, where you don’t need to wear a suit. These people were not the A students in high school, they were the B and C students.

3. Women are less likely to become millionaires than men, unless it’s through marriage. There are far more men than women in the high-paying jobs in the US-

physicians, lawyers, optometrists; and the women who go into these professions tend to earn less than the men. Moreover, women in all professions tend to get more financial help from their parents.

4. There are not a lot of millionaires in the white-collar professions. If you’re a doctor, lawyer or stockbroker, you have to look wealthy and successful, like your clients. You’re under pressure to spend a lot of money and that eats away at your savings.

5. The typical millionaire earns $130,000 a year and saves about 20% of it annually. They spend time managing their money and planning their financial future.

6. Even those who don’t earn a lot of money can become millionaires. People don’t

understand how little money it could take to become a millionaire. If people who

drank three cans of soda a day for 46 years had invested that money in soft drink company stocks instead, they’d be millionaires.

Check your understanding.

Are these sentences True or False?

1. Most millionaires drive expensive cars.

2. Millionaires spend their money carefully.

3. Most millionaires get their money from their parents.

4. Most millionaires are self-employed and own businesses.

5. Most millionaires were not great students.

6. There are more female than male millionaires.

7. Doctors and lawyers are usually millionaires.
