Job Satisfaction.
1. Why do most people choose to stay with their current employer?
The answer usually depends on their age, life circumstances and personal
motivations. A recent poll on our website asked the same question.
2. The top reason for staying on the job was nature of the work and
job satisfaction. Coming in a close second was flexible schedule and work-
life balance. Next was work environment and corporate culture, followed
by advancement opportunity and personal growth. Salary and benefits were
the least important.
3. Is it unusual that salary comes in last on this list? Not really. Most people
know they could make more money elsewhere, but it’s not enough to get
them to leave a job they like.
4. Advancement doesn’t rank at top of the list, either. That’s probably
because so many people think that moving up can make life on the job more
unpleasant or even difficult. The only thing one gets in return is more money.
5. So what creates job satisfaction?. One typical answer is “I like to be
challenged.” People who say this like to work toward goals. They like new
challenging assignments so that they can test their skills and creativity.
6. Another typical answer is “ I like to feel I’m making a contribution”.
Many people get a sense of community when they are working with a
group of co-workers toward a common goal. It is very important for them to
have close, friendly relationships with co-workers, and they thrive when
others praise their work and appreciate their efforts.
7. Finally, there are those who say “ I get satisfaction from a job
well done.” Such people love the technical work they do; they feel proud of
the results of their efforts. These people have high standards of quality and
work best when they have control over a project. They thrive when others
know about the work they have done.
8. Ultimately, the main reason people work is to earn money,
but it is not money that gives them satisfaction. Offer employees something
more, and you are likely to get more from them.

1. Read the following stories to find out how people can earn or make money.
A. Sylvia Ball, businesswoman, 34.
Three years ago an aunt of mine left me some money in her will. I borrowed
some more from the bank, a friend of mine lent me a bit, and I had some savings
in the bank. So I was able to to start my own company, making jeans. I worked like
a slave, but it was worth it. I was able to pay my friend back after one year; I
paid the band loan back after two; and now I export to fifteen countries.
B. Alice Copley, widow, 75.
When my husband died, fifteen years ago, I knew nothing about money,
nothing at all. But a friend of his – of my husband’s- gave me some good advice.
He told me ‘If you want to invest, always remember that people have to eat.
So, buy shares in food companies.’ That seemed a very good idea to me, so I
asked my bank manager to buy me some shares in a chain of supermarkets. And
they’ve given me very good results.
C. Sidney Wise, businessman, 34
My uncle’s a builder, and he’s given me the job of business manager. We buy
old houses, recondition them quickly, and sell them at three times the original
price. Six months ago, for example, we bought a house for $5,000. We spent
another $5,000 on reconditioning it, and two weeks ago I was offered $25,000.
It’s a quick way of making money, and I don’t see anything wrong with it.
D. George Arthur, civil engineer, 55
Recently I was given a big rise in salary. I didn’t ask the government for it,
and quite honestly, I think I’m paid too much. I’m just not interested in money.
On principle, I never lend money to somebody, and I’ve never borrowed from
anybody, either. My bank manager once explained the benefit of credit and
hire-purchase to me, but I pay for everything straight away. I’ve never been left
any money, either. I’d be embarrassed if I were.
