Exercise 1. Make sentences interrogative. Use is/are/do/does.

Example: What acts or omissions … criminal law regulate? – What acts or omissions does criminal law regulate?

1. Why … we have laws and legal system? 2. … solicitors advising clients on general legal issues? 3. … law always govern the society and control the behavior of its members? 4. What cases … the barrister preparing now? 5. Why … the intending solicitors have to enter a two year training contract with a firm of solicitors? 6. Exercise 2. Open the brackets and put the verb into the correct form. Use Present Simple or Present Continuous.

Example: Now the juries … a decision whether the accused … guilty or innocent (to make, to be). – Now the juries are making a decision whether the accused is guilty or innocent.

1. The police … evidence against the accused from those who can give evidence (to collect). 2. At present the judge … the jury on the law relevant to the case (to advise). 3. The counsels for the prosecution and for the defence always … opening statements to the jury (to make). 4. In today’s case the judge … alone (to sit). 5. The magistrate sometimes … the investigation in cases of serious criminal offences (to conduct). 6. Do you hear? Tom … against a judicial decision which is not in his party’s favour (to appeal). 7. The Court … in accordance with international treaties and conventions (to decide). 8. In a partnership members … and … in management and sharing profits (to associate, to participate). 9. Exercise 3. Complete the sentences using one of these verbs. Use them in the Present Simple or Present Continuous.

Exercise 4. Correct the mistakes where necessary.

Example: The policemen frees the person alleged to have committed the crime. – The policemen free the person alleged to have committed the crime.

1. The International Court of Justice seat at the Hague, Netherlands. 2. Tom undertaking a Legal Practice Course now. 3. What is the legal system needs to provide legal service? 4. Be quiet! The prosecution calls the witness. 5. What does a contract? 6. He isn’t wanting to work at this factory because of the workplace insecurity. 7. A warning serve as the bases for disciplinary interview which lead to a dismissal. 8. Listen! The judge are sentence the criminal to two-year imprisonment. –9. Why is the company want to fire its director? 10. Does the magistrate reading the verdict now? 11. Don’t hesitate to contact your barrister if you are needing clarifications. 12. What do both counsels at the beginning of a case?

 

Exercise 5. Translate the following sentences from Russian into English.

1. Суд имеет полномочия выяснять обстоятельства дела, разрешать споры и выносить решения суда. 2. Правительство управляет обществом и контролирует поведение граждан. 3. Почему ты паркуешь свою машину здесь? Это незаконно. Ты хочешь заплатить штраф? 4. Солиситор сейчас занят. Он дает консультацию своим клиентам по вопросам налогообложения. 5. У мировых судей нет юридического образования. Они заседают с чиновником, имеющим юридические полномочия. 6. Сегодня присяжные обсуждают приговор на открытом судебном заседании. 7. Как ты думаешь, что это делают полицейские? Они допрашивают подозреваемого и свидетелей. 8. Полиция обычно проводит аресты, обыски и задержания. 9. Подозреваемый имеет право хранить молчание. 10. Присяжные принимают сейчас решение, является ли обвиняемый виновным. 11. Адвокат ответчика защищает подозреваемого от нарушения его прав. 12. Апелляционная процедура состоит из судебных постановлений и практики, по которым апелляционный суд пересматривает решение суда первой инстанции.
