v Indefinite Tenses: Passive Voice.

Exercise 12. Put the verb into the correct form, Present Indefinite or Past Indefinite, active or passive:

1. It’s a big company. Five hundred people ______ (employ) there. 2. ____ (somebody / repair) our equipment yesterday? 3. Profit from the new line of production ____ (cover) most of our losses. 4. The goods _____ (send) a week ago and they ____ (arrive) yesterday. 5. While I was on holiday, team of our marketers ___ (start) a new marketing campaign. 6. Why ____ (Sue / refuse) from her job? Didn’t she enjoy it? 7. Why ___ (manager / fire) from his job? What did he do wrong? 8. The company is not independent. It ____ (own) by a much larger company. 9. I saw our general manager last evening. Somebody ____ (enter) the order but nobody _____ (pay), so the goods ____ (not / need). 10. Where ____ (these goods / produce)? In London? ______ (you / distribute) them, or somebody else? 11. Sometimes it’s quite difficult to work here, but it’s not a problem for me – I ____ (not / disturb) by it. 12. How much of our losses_____ (cover) by the profit from new line of production?

Exercise 13. Make up sentences from these words. Some of the sentences are questions:

e.g.: the office/clean/every day – The office is cleaned every day.

the office/clean/yesterday – The office was cleaned yesterday.

Exercise 14. Rewrite the sentences in the Passive Voice by making the words in bold part of the sentence their subjects:

1. We offer an attractive price reduction. 2. They completed the research last month. 3. Someone translate the contract into French. 4. We will offer an attractive salary to the person appointed. 5. The exporter determines the goods for export. 6. A team of consultants studied the problem. 7. Companies provide free medical insurance for all employees. 8. They held talks last night. 9. The board of directors gave them a week to make a decision. 10. Productive machines will replace many workers.

Exercise 15. Transform the following sentences into Passive Voice:

1. Somebody grouped market ingredients into the four categories. 2. They involved the wholesalers and retailers to the distribution. 3. People don’t use prices as a critical component in marketing. 4. Marketers planned and executed marketing conception to satisfy individual and organizational goals. 5. How do people learn strategic combinations? 6. Somebody made decisions on packing and pricing. 7. Producers created exchanges to make the price flexible.

Exercise 16. Change the following sentences into Active Voice:

1. This report will be written by our manager. 2. He was promised a new computer by technical department. 3. Students are exhausted by their research work. 4. A new contract is studied by our partners. 5. His documents were stolen by someone. 6. The equipment will be delivered by our firm in the evening. 7. These goods were paid for by them at 5 p.m. 8. Two employees are granted ten day’s leave by our top manager. 9. He is elected the Vice President by the people. 10. A lot of new products are sold by our company abroad.

 

Exercise 17. Fill in all the gaps with:

a) 'somebody/ anybody/ nobody; something/ anything/ nothing; somewhere/ anywhere/ nowhere':

1. I offer… this vacancy in our company. 2. Does...want to be responsible for the brand name and functionality? 3. Can … tell me about the essential changes in the global market during the last six months? 4. Would you like to emphasize … in the contract? 5. They discussed the plan in German so I couldn't understand... they said. 6. I'm disappointed because … remembered my instructions. 7. As it's your idea you can change … you like in the promotional strategy. 8. Oh no! … stole my advertising materials. 9. They do … to save their capital. 10. Exercise 18. Translate into English:

1. Всі товари можуть бути класифіковані як споживчі та промислові. 2. Ніхто не ризикує знизити ціну на нові товари. 3. Деякі товари, що були привезені на нашу фірму, не є оригінальними. 4. Продаж промислових товарів було розпочато минулого місяця. 5. Дослідження ринку буде вдало проведене. 6. Соціальний і управлінський процес в цій компанії контролювався добре відомим спеціалістом. 7. Успіх компанії буде досягнутий вигідним розташуванням торгових підприємств. 8. Ефективний продаж товару кінцевим споживачам робить нашу компанію успішною. 9. Попит на наші послуги змінюється згідно з швидкими соціальними змінами. 10. Ці проекти, зазвичай, приймаються радою директорів.
