ЗАДАНИЯ

1.1. Найдите транскрипцию приведённых ниже слов в англо-русском словаре. Произнесите слова в соответствии с транскрипцией (см. Приложение1). Прослушайте слова (см. Введение.п. 2). (Find a transcription of the following words in the English-Russian dictionary. Say the words according to the transcription (see Application1). Listen to the words (see Introduction. item2.)

TRANSMITTING MESSAGES BY TELEGRAPH

Telegraph transmission is a method of transmitting messages over a distance by means of electrical impulses. Elec­trical impulses are sent through wires. At the transmitting end, the key is pressed and the circuit is closed. An electric current starts flowing through the conducting wire or cable to the receiver. The dots and dashes of the Morse code are being produced by varying the length of time for which the current flows. At the receiving end, the weak electrical impulses make to op­erate a relay. The relay closes a local circuit by carrying a larger current. The enlarged current either sounds a buzzer or a telephone receiver. It can also cause the dots and dashes to be automatically recorded.

As for the buzzer, it is very much like an electric bell, but the difference is that it has no gong. In the process of current flowing a buzzing note is pro­duced by vibration.

By means of electrical relays the electric current flowing in one circuit can open or close a second circuit. In this way, the switching on and off of a current in the second circuit is controlled.

Electrical relays may be mechanical switches operated by gas-filled ther­mionic valves - thyratrons.
