Religion in Ukraine

According to the Constitution of Ukraine, Church is separated from the state, and school is separated from the Church.

The most widespread religion in Ukraine now is Christianity. Most of the believers of our country belong to the Orthodox Church. Christianity was adopted as the state religion by Prince Volodymyr the Red Sun in 988. Before that there were various pagan beliefs and people of different parts of the country worshipped different gods. After Christianity was introduced in Kyivska Rus, pagan religions were cruelly persecuted and people who did not accept Christianity were killed. Although it was an extremely difficult period for people, it had its positive consequences - it helped to unite small isolated principalities into a powerful state.

In 1596 a split occurred in the Church, creating two churches; the Orthodox Church and the Uniate(Greek Catholic) Church. Today much of the population in western Ukraine belongs to the Greek Catholic Church while the believers of the eastern part of the country prefer Orthodox faith.

In modern times (19th-20th centuries) both churches experienced persecutions. The rebirth of the Independent Ukrainian State in 1917-1918 marked the beginning of separation of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church from the Russian Orthodox Church.

In the 1930s most churches and cathedrals in the former Soviet Union were closed or destroyed by the order of Stalin. Many believers and members of the clergy were persecuted, arrested, exiled or shot. The situation changed for the better in the late 1980s after perestroyka and glasnost proclaimed wider freedom of conscience and religion.

Since Ukraine's independence, the number of believers and church-goers has increased. There has been a rebirth of religious activity: religious buildings have been returned to their rightful owners, new churches have been built, old churches and cathedrals reconstructed, monasteries, religious seminaries and academies restored and Sunday schools opened.

The same changes have happened in other religions that are worshipped in Ukraine: Roman Catholicism, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism and different denominations of Christian Protestant churches, like Methodist, Baptist, Evangelistic, Adventist and many others.

Today the leading churches of Ukraine are: Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchy, headed by Metropolitan Volodymyr Sabada), Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (headed by Cardinal Myroslav Lobachivsky) and Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kyiv Patriarchy (headed by Patriarch Filaret).
