The Thirteen Colonies 1587-1755

09/23/1587 Roanoke Roanoke was the first attempt from England to colonize in the new world. Sir Walter Raleigh was given a charter from Queen Elizabeth to create the colony. The attempt didn't go so well, and the colony strangely disappeared and no one knows how.
09/23/1607 Jamestown Jamestown was the first successful attempt for England to colonize in The New World. A charter was given by King James 1 to the Virginia Company of London to establish a settlement. The people of Jamestown were not prepared for all their hardships, and they were about to give up until John Rolf helped Jamestown pay off their debts with his tobacco plants.
09/26/1620 Plymouth Plymouth was the second successful attempt for England to create settlements in the New World. The Pilgrims/Separatists/Puritans were tired of the religious control in England so they made a settlement in the New World for religious freedom as well as money. King James I gave the charter to the Pilgrims/Puritans/Separatists to make the settlement.
09/27/1632 Maryland Lord Baltimore wanted to make a place for his fellow Catholics. King Charles I gave him land above Virginia for his Catholic Sanctuary. It was named Maryland after the queen, Henrietta Maria, or the Virgin Mary.
09/26/1635 Rhode Island and Providence Plantations Rodger Williams was kicked out of Connecticut due to his ideas and he and some followers created the settlement Providence which was later part of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.
09/26/1636 Hartford and Connecticut Tom Hooker was unhappy with the way that John Winthrop was running the Massachusetts colony, so he and his followers decided to make the settlement of Hartford in 1636, which later became part of the Connecticut colony.
09/27/1663 Settling in the Carolinas King Charles II created a proprietary colony south of Virginia called Carolina. In 1670, settlers began arriving in Carolina and in 1680, a city was founded there called Charles Town, which was later renamed Charleston.
09/27/1664 England attacks New Netherland The Dutch people set up settlements in the New World. One of these settlements, called New Netherland, had an excellent harbor and was a large center of trade. England sent a fleet to take over New Netherland and the governor of New Netherland, Peter Stuyvesant surrendered.
09/27/1675 New England goes to war with Wampanoag Indians New England went to war with the Wampanoag Indians and their allies because the chief, Metacomet wanted to stop the settlers from moving into native American lands. The war ended in defeat for the Wampanoag and their allies.
09/27/1680 Pennsylvania William Penn's father gave King Charles a great amount of money and to pay off the loan, William Penn aquired land from King Charles and called it Pennsylvania.

12/01/1620 Massachusetts English Puritans land the Mayflower at Plymouth and found the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
03/01/1623 New Hampshire John Mason and John Wheelwright found the city of Hover and the New Hampshire Colony.
03/01/1634 Maryland Cecil Calvert founds the Maryland Colony.
03/01/1636 Rhode Island The cities of Providence, founded by Roger Williams, and Portsmouth, founded by Anne Hutchinson, join together to form the Rhode Island Colony.
09/01/1636 Connecticut The Connecticut Colony is founded by Thomas Hooker and Massachusetts colonists.
03/01/1638 Delaware Dutch Peter Minuit and the New Sweden Company establish New Sweden, and King Charles II of England renames it to the Delaware Colony.
03/01/1653 North Carolina Virginians settle the North Carolina Colony.
03/01/1663 South Carolina King Charles II issues for settling the South Carolina Colony.
03/01/1664 New Jersey Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret establish the New Jersey Colony in New Netherland.
09/01/1664 New York The brother of King Charles II, James the Duke of York, founds the New York Colony.
03/01/1682 Pennsylvania Looking for freedom of religion, Quaker William Penn founds the Pennsylvania Colony.
03/01/1732 Georgia James Oglethorpe founds the Georgia Colony, named after King George II as protection against the expansion of Spain in the Latin Americas.
