Task 1. Read the following text attentively. Look at the title and the photos. Have you seen the film? Would you like to see it? What is the genre of this film? Give your arguments.

A. Complete the gaps in the first paragraph using your active vocabulary. To help you, the first litter of each word is given.

B. Give synonyms (synonymic expressions) to the underlined word using your active vocabulary in the second, third paragraphs.

C. Correct the mistakes (spelling) in the forth and fifth paragraphs. There are 5 of them.

 

D. Reread the film review. Number the paragraph summaries below in order, 1-5.

CINEMA PARADISO (1989)

 

1. Nick invited me to go to the (1) с_____ to watch the (2) f_____ (3) f_____ Cinema Paradiso at the Star. The (4) r_____ by the Daily Expresswas good, and I agreed to go to the 8 o'clock (5) p_____. When I arrived, Nick was waiting for me in the (6) f_____, looking at a colour poster for “Cinema Paradiso on the wall. The (7) u_____ took our tickets and showed us to our seats. I don't like to be too close to the (8) s_____ and I usually sit in the back (9) r_____ if possible. Before the main film there was a (10) t_____ for the following week's film.

2. Giuseppe Tomatore isthe (1) director of “Cinema Paradiso”. Philippe Noiret as Alfredo (2) created a true-to-life image. Salvatore Cascio, who (3) plays the part of the boy (4) was perfectly cast for his (5) part. The (6) film (7) took the best foreign language film (8) title in 1989 at Oscar Film festival.

3. (9) The actions in the film take place in an Italian village in the 1940s and 50s. It was not filmed in studio but (10) in a real place in Sicily.

4. The film is about a little boy called Salvatore who ends up becoming a famous film director. The plot of this film is not dull, draged-out but emotional and entertaining. In the beginning of the film, he goes back to his village for the first time in thirty years, for the funeral of an old friend, Alfredo. The rest of the film is a “fleshback” about his childhood. At his village there is only one movie theatre, called Cinema Paradiso. Salvatore is crazy about films so he spends all his time there. He becomes friends with Alfredo, the man who shows the films, and later he works as his asistant. But when he is a teenager he leaves the village and goes to work in Rome, and in the end he becomes a famous director. He never sees Alfredo again.

5. I strongly recommend “Cinema Paradiso”. It is either heat-warming, sensitive, dramatic or gripping, captivating, impeccable. The film makes you laugh and cry, it has a memorable soundtreck, and it is a moving tribute to the magic of the early days of cinema.
