Affirmative 1

Good morning ladies and gentlemen, opponents and guests!

I’m the first speaker of the affirmative team Stasy Kovalenko.

Let me introduce the second speaker Liza Bordunova and the third speaker Dasha Beloshavina.

Today we are debating the resolution “It’s impossible to make a real friend online”

Let me give the definitions from Newbury House Dictionary of American English.

Impossible means not able to be done, extremely difficult.

Real means true, not fake or imaginary.

Friend is a person whom one likes and trusts.

On-line – using a connection to a network of computers.

Our criteria is We can’t judge a person only by his words.

We have three main arguments. The first argument is Virtual communication is a total lie. The second argument is Only time can show a real friend. And at last our third argument is Real friend as a Real life is indispensable (незаменимый).

At the beginning I would like to speak about our first argument.

Virtual communication is a total lie.

What makes a true friendship anymore? Is it whether or not the person knows your birthday, or how many hours you spend talking on the phone or hanging out in person? With all the ways we can communicate now — Skype, ICQ, AIM, Facebook Messenger, etc. — and with all the people on our buddy lists, who are we really friends with? And my answer is nobody. Is it impossible to have real friends who are purely for the Internet.

Thinkabout it, guys! We aren’t talking about mates, but about real best friends!

Firstly, we can’t judge a person by his words. We can’t understand the real thoughts of this boy/girl. We have hardly had so many cases when people got disappointed after meeting virtual friends in their real lives. And the main reason was the total lie during the communication via the Internet. Disappointment is the most harmless. (безобидный). More unhandy situation is when the girl wants to meet young guy, but as a matter of fact she met a middle-aged man. Just believe me, the consequences may be very harmful.

Judging only by the words, people can make a lot of mistakes. They say: «paper or webpage can endure everything, but the human creature can’t» So, words are just words. A person can say everything he wants and he doesn’t need to tell you the truth. And of course on-line friend is not able to show his real emotions, just in case that he lies.

Let’s come up to the second argument. And here it is Only time can show a real friend.

And as the strong support for these words is a proverb “ A man must eat a peck of salt with his friend before he knows him". Only face-to-face communication shows us, who is the real friend.

You can’t reject the fact, the biggest problem of our modern generation is internet addiction, when people just, in general, refuse from real life. I don’t believe, that you have never faced toward the problem to stop Internet connection in time, it seemed just to check email. And you waste your free time. Friends, it is hurtfully to live your total life like this, isn’t it? What will you tell your kids about your childhood or youth? For instance: do you know, my dear, I have spent all my spare time in the Internet, I had so cool virtual friends, I was sitting whole days in the Internet and communicating with them. Eventually, I couldn’t keep fit, cause of such passive lifestyle, and I haven’t got funny stories in my life. Do you know what, I won’t like to have such future, and that’s why my mother band me using the Internet more than 2 hours, nevertheless I use it just for studying. She takes care of eyesight and health in general.

And I would like to continue supporting our resolution with the last third argument.

Real friend as a real life is indispensable. (незаменим)

The child till 12 years can spend only a a half of an hour at the computer

(the doctors aproved) If he has no real friends, he will have no friends in general. When you are a child, unless it is possible to make up games with friends in a yard, games in snowballs for communication on the Internet or even for the web camera? In my early childhood there were no computers and anybody at all didn't know that such the Internet was. Nevertheless all children had friends. I’ve known my best friend since we were 7 years, our friendship is tried-and -true (проверена временем).

Imagine, that all your real friends became virtual? Could you live in such world? After all, real world would also turn only into the virtual world. At the weekends there would be nobody to go to the cinema, bowling or on a skating rink with. The person can’t do it via the Internet. Let's acknowledge that these entertainments are not basic. Moreover, moral support is more important. I under no circumstances would disagree, under no circumstances, that the virtual friend will be able to help you at a difficult moment simply typing texts. When it is possible to embrace, look at person’s eyes or just to keep or hug is a different story.
