Theme: A Case Study of Translation of BBC News Discourse
Task 1: Explore the translation of news discourse in terms of the way in which recontextualization of discourse across the boundaries of language, culture and institutions results in the transformation, as well as transfer, of information.
Task 2: Basing on a comparative analysis of news stories on BBC and Khabar (Kazakhstan) examine how Kazakh / Russian news is (re)constructed in translation.
Task 3: Prepare a brochure on the given theme. It should be useful to understand the main peculiarities of translation of this news.
Task 3: Write a short report (about 250-300words) on the theme:
“Discourse analysis of newspaper headlines”
Cover the following topics:
The characteristics which justify that particular attention be given to headlines in press analysis, namely:
- the prominence they acquire through diffusion;
- the role they play in orienting the interpretation of the reader;
- the shared cultural context which they evoke.
2. The constitution of a corpus of press headlines.
3. The typical linguistic features of newspaper headlines (using examples from our corpus).(2)
4. The identification of linguistic features relevant to the analysis of national representations:
- designation
- modality
- presupposition

Theme: Legal discourse: a translation-oriented approach
Task 1: Writing: information sheet
Aim: In addition to a wide range of specialized terms and expressions, legal texts are also characterized by the presence of a large number of words which belong to the common vocabulary, but which are assigned either special or vague meanings in this type of discourse. The information sheet should demonstrate some lexical peculiarities presented by texts belonging to the category of the EU legislation, pointing to the problems that the Russian/Kazakh translator of such discourse might encounter.
2. Make a glossary of following keywords:
Key Words: EU legislation, lexico-semantic norms, specialized terms, preciseness of meaning, vagueness of meaning, corpus, rigurous technical sense
3. Before writing search for the following information:
- theoretical issues of legal discourse;
- authors and researches from American and Soviet schools engaging in legal discourse studies;
- types of legal discourse and their peculiarities;
- samples of legal discourse ST and TT;
- perform translation analysis of these samples and find out lexical peculiarities of translation;
- make a translation analysis table;
Planning your information sheet
a. What title will you give your information sheet so as to make it interesting and attractive to your audience?
b. How many sections will you have in your information sheet and what headings will you use for each one?
c. Will you need to use a more formal or informal style with the audience you are writing for?
d. What is the purpose of your information sheet (e.g. to inform, warn and advise)? How will this affect the language you use? (Remember, you don’t want to put visitors off coming to your country!)
e. How will you introduce the topics you cover in each section? (Remember, you don’t want to make your customs and values seem illogical to visitors.)
4. Write the first draft of your information sheet.
5. Check your first draft by answering these questions:
Ø Does the general heading make you want to read the sheet?
Ø Is there a helpful introduction?
Ø Are the different paragraphs clear and complete? Does each paragraph have its own heading?
Ø Are linking words/expressions used in an appropriate way?
Ø Does the information sheet inform in a clear and readable way?
Ø Is the style appropriate for the target reader?
6. Reread your information sheet and decide how you will change it.
7. Rewrite your information sheet.

Task 1: Writing a critical essay on the topic:
Undoing the sleights of hand: Prophets and scholars – two mythic discourses
Task 2: Planning a Critical Essay. The planning procedure consists of entirely the same factors as of any other essay.
