Fulbright Program, 1. international educational program of the United States government that provides 2. monetary awards, known as Fulbright grants or scholarships, to students, 3. scholars, professionals, and teachers from the United States and other countries. U.S. grantees travel abroad to lecture, conduct research, or teach, and foreign grantees travel to the United States for the same purpose. The awards are named after Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, who 4. conceived the program following World War II (1939-1945). Fulbright believed educational and cultural exchanges between nations would encourage 5. mutual understanding and 6. discourage war.
