The procedure of admission to Universities.
USA:
colleges rely on two admissions examinations—the SAT [the Scholastic Aptitude Test) and ACT (the American Collegic Test.The tests must be taken in your senior year in highs school ) Both tests are composed of three parts: language proficiency, maths, and logic. The lowest score for getting into university is 550
Great Britain:
А student who wants to go to university usually applies for admission before he takes his advanced level examinations ) First of all, he must write to the Universities Central Council on Admissions (UCCA), and they send him а form which he has to complete.On this form, he has to write the names of six universities in order of preference, ) This form, together with an account of his out-of-school activities and two references, is then sent back to the UCCA
Each applicant is first considered by the university admission board. the university admission officer passes the candidate's papers on to the academic department concerned /One or two members of this department wi11 then look at the candidate's application /, the department may make the candidate an offer (either а definite offer This means that the candidate will be accepted by the university if he fulfills the requirements stated in the offer.
Types of Universities in Great Britain and the USA.
Universities in the UK may be divided into three types: (
• The old established universities, such as Oxford, Cambridge,
•"redbrick universities" such as London and Manchester (
• The "new universities " established after Wor1d War II, such as Essex, Lancaster,)
In USA
· 2-year colleges(they are often open admissions with low tuition)
· 4-year colleges(the most of them provide liberal education and Bachelor`s degree)
· Universities(provide the students with Master`s or Doctor`s degree)
· Technical institutions (provide the students with wide variety of technical skills)
Peculiarities of the teaching process
Curiculum consist of the 2 main components – general education and the major field of study. Universities provide different formats of the courses of study:
-The lecture course (where the instructor gives lectures with minimal interaction)
-seminar course (where the students prepare and present their original written works)
-the colloquium (reading course where the instructor assigns readings for each seassion)
-the tutorial course (where students work on the topic and meet with the instructor weakly for discussion and guidance)
- the laboratory course (work takes place in laboratory)
University degrees.
USA:
Graduate programs grant a variety of master's degreesThe doctoral
degree is the highest academic award and recognizes the graduate's ability to conduct
independent research
Great Britain:
The main undergraduate qualification awarded by bachelor's degree Other undergraduate qualifications include: Higher National Diploma (HND), Higher National Certificate (HNC) and Diploma in Higher Education (DipHE) which usually take one or two years to complete.
