It is not easy to become a student. High demand for higher education led to high entrance competition regardless of the form of study or specialty. Only the very best can study at the budget cost. In order to obtain free education an applicant has to pass the compulsory centralized testing in two or three admission disciplines successfully. The entrants who passed the entrance exam successfully but did not win the competition (did not get the necessary entrance score) have the opportunity to study on their own account.
The paying students can make use of lax credit system.
1.4 The Belarusian State Economic University: rules of enrolment, schools and conditions for studies, curricula, student life.
The biggest educational establishment in Belarus training specialists in the field of economics is the BSEU. The Belarus State Economic University was formed in 1992 on the basis of the Belarussian State Institute of the National Economy which was founded in 1933. The University is headed by the Rector.
The BSEU has a well developed infrastructure which provides training and research within twelve schools:
· School of Management.
· School of Accounting and Economics.
· School of Finance and Banking.
· School of International Economic Relations.

· School of Marketing.
· School of Law.
· School of International Business Communications.

In addition, BSEU incorporates Bobruisk and Pinsk branches, Consulting Center for Commerce, Institute for Updating Qualification and Retraining Personnel, and a Specialized School of Psychological and Teaching Updating. The university has a Research Centre, an International Relations Division, and a Publishing Centre. The university library is one of the best supplied and equipped in the country.
The training of students is done on a multi-level basis. The degrees pursued are those of bachelors, specialists and masters. The graduates can also continue their education in a post-graduate school called aspirantura (full-time or part-time), where they pursue a Ph.D. degree, and in a post-doctorate school called doctorantura to pursue a post-doctorate degree (doctor habile).
The Belarus State Economic University has 59 departments (of which 39 are graduating ones). Training specialists with higher scholarly qualification is done at the graduate school (12 majors of doctoral programs) and post-doctoral courses (6 majors), both full-time and part-time. The priorities in the organization of teaching are thorough training, a creative approach to mastering knowledge, as well as making conditions for the realization of individual abilities. The focus is made on providing the systematic level of studies, making connections among the subjects taught, establishing interdisciplinary courses, developing independent work skills, implementing active forms of the teaching process, and effective methods of testing. The university is proud of its technical equipment. It has about 40 computer classrooms, training bookkeeping centres, as well as automated PC-based training offices for specialists in management, finance, banking, and commerce.
The university occupies 9 buildings. The conditions for study are good. Numerous tutorial rooms, lecture halls, modern laboratories, computer and foreign language classes, audio- and video-facilities, a big library, several spacious reading halls and canteens are at the students' disposal. The tuition is free, but those who failed to get the necessary score during their entrance tests, have to pay for their study. Many students get hostel accommodation and most are given state grants.
The academic year is divided into two terms: the winter term and the summer term. Each term ends with examinations. At the end of the full course of study which is five years, students pass their final state exams. During their final year of study students are sent to practical training in their future profession to different state and private companies, banks, factories, etc. Many of them usually combine work and study.
The University’s international activitiesare aimed at developing relations with the leading universities of the CIS countries, France, Germany, Italy, and China.
A lot of activity is being done outside the curriculum as well. There are many societies, sports and art circles that students are engaged in. Going to the cinema, theatre, concert halls, clubs or dancing parties is also very popular. Time at the university passes very quickly, but memories about it stay for a long time.
But higher education in Belarus does not only mean lectures, seminars and exams. In addition Belarusian students participate in international scientific conferences and competitions, student exchange programs.
After graduation the budget students are provided with the first workplaces. Finding a good job on specialty both in the republic and abroad is not a problem for paying students either.
