Infinitive
1. Функция подлежащего: To save money now seems impossible.
Переводится неопределенной формой глагола или отглагольным существительным.
Ex. 1.
1. To bring to the foreground leaders who will work together to achieve peace will take both parties time. (New York Times) -
2. To see that economic liberty was the means to reserve decline took wisdom. (Business Week) -
2. Функция предикативного члена, именной части составного сказуемого: His plan was to keep the affair secret. Переводится неопределенной формой глагола или существительным.
Ex. 2.
1. The idea is to make Russia a partner in many NATO activities. (Moscow News) -
2. The aim is to help make globalization a positive force for all, one which ensures broad economic and political stability. (Business Week) -
3. Функция дополнения: He wants to pay now. Переводится неопределенной формой глагола или придаточным предложением.
Ex. 3.
1. VISA and INCOMBANK plan to launch a new card, to be known as Visa Roskart, later this year. (Moscow Times) -
2. Government claims to make its citizens feel safe and secure which is the responsibility of every government. (Independent) -
3. The analyst declined to be identified. (New York Times) -
4. Функция обстоятельства цели. Переводится неопределенной формой глагола с союзом (для того, чтобы) или отглагольным существительным с предлогом для. Часто стоят союзы in order, so as - с тем, чтобы: He went there to find Ann.
Ex.4.
1. To make a purchase, a consumer places the card in the merchant’ terminal and keys in a personal identification number. -
2. It takes a lot of courage to show your dreams to someone else. (Moscow News) -
3. The US President should work with the Security Council to win support for a new resolution. (New York Times) -
4. Troops forced their way into the theatre after terrorists executed two hostages to press their demands that Russian president pull his troops out of their homeland. (Observer) -
5. Функция обстоятельства результата или следствия, которому предшествуют слова such … (as), enough, so…, too…, переводится модальным глаголом может, возможно и неопределенной формой глагола либо самостоятельным предложением с союзами и, но:It is too good to be true.

1. A Time magazine poll found that 69% of those surveyed say Mr. Clinton “is honest and trustworthy enough to be president”. (New York Times) -
2. The vice-presidential candidate has simply put on too much political weight to be ignored. (Business Week) -
6. Функция определения. Стоит после существительного или заменяющего его местоимения и отвечает на вопрос какой?
Ex.6.
1. A US investment group is looking for start-ups in China; it means there are more mistakes and money to be made. (New York Times) -
2. The point to remember is that under the present plan Iraq is heading for a series of elections. (Independent) -
3. The issue to be thinking about is not how to go back but how to go forward. (Wall Street Journal) -
После слов the first, the last и порядковых числительных инфинитив в функции определения переводится личной формой глагола в том же времени, что и глагол-сказуемое главного предложения. Инфинитив может также переводиться причастием.
4. Monday’s strike was the second to be aimed at the Iraqi leader. (Independent) -
5. The first policy to be put forward to solve the problem is to change the demography by massive immigration. (Wall Street Journal) -
6. He was the last member of the Government to oppose the war. (Moscow News) -
7. Инфинитив может быть вводным членом предложения. Здесь могут употребляться устойчивые словосочетания to tell the truth, to be frank, to put it mildly, to begin with, etc.
Ex. 7.
1. The presidential campaign was no easy battle, to put it mildly. (New York Times) -
2. To be fair, the EU and the Americans have not been entirely inactive, they tried and put pressure on the government of the country. (Wall Street Journal) -
