REGULATIONS

The competition’s mission is

- to promote a higher status of music teachers in contemporary social and cultural space, as well as to generalize and disseminate innovative pedagogical practices;

- to initiate reflections by the pedagogical community on the current content of general and supplementary educations;

- to help enhance professional training of music teachers; and

- to encourage social activity of music teachers.

The competition’s goals are

- to find music teachers with high level of professional competence;

- to unlock pedagogical creativity of music pedagogy majors;

- to popularize efficient pedagogical approaches and methods in various musical activities; and

- to encourage researches by music students and teachers.

The idea of the competition belongs to Bella S. Rachina, Honored Teacher of Russia; Honored Higher Education Worker of Russia; corresponding member, International Academy of PedagogicalEducation; Associate Professor of music education, Herzen University.

Participation

The competition sets no age limit and is open to four groups of candidates:

I Group: undergraduate and graduate music pedagogy majors;

II Group: general education music teachers;

III Group: supplementary education music teachers; and

IV Group: kinder-garden music teachers.

The candidates may participate in multiple categories.

Order of the competition

The competition trials include two rounds.

March 10-18, 2013 the Preliminary Round will deal with recorded competition materials and documents, which the candidates should submit to the Organization committee no later than March 10, 2013.

April 17-20, 2013 the Final will take place at the Herzen University School of Music. Those candidates, who will have most dramatically demonstratedtheir pedagogical competences in the Preliminary Round, will receive invitations to take part in the Final.

The drawing of lots will determine the order of appearances in the Final.

Categories and competition rules

Category I

Open music lesson in general education

Groups I and II

Preliminary Round

- A music lesson video (duration: 35–40 min);

- A scenario of the lesson, including:

ü the title, goals and objectives of the lesson;

ü a detailed conspectus;

ü the list of musical pieces used specifying composers and titles; and

ü a reflective analysis of the lesson.

Age of pupils: 8–14 years.

Final

- An open lesson with pupils of St. Petersburg general education schools (no less than 15 persons, duration 40 minutes). Group II candidates have a right to teach the lesson to the schoolchildren they have taught before, by content of the Organization Committee. In this case, Group II candidates have to demonstrate a high level of musical preparation of their pupils in various kinds of musical activities.

- The defense and reflective analysis of the open music lesson (duration 5-10 minutes)
