Read the extract from the novel “Jane Eyre”, entitle it, divide it into paragraphs and say in 1-2 sentences what each paragraph is about.

I struggled all the way, for I was very angry and didn’t understand what I was doing. The servants carried me upstairs, locked the door and went away. Nobody slept in the red room, yet it was one of the largest and richest rooms in the house. A dark bed with red curtains stood in the middle of the room; the two large windows were also covered with dark red curtains; the carpet was red too; the table at the foot of the bed was covered with a red table-cloth; the wardrobe, the toilet-table, the chairs were of dark red wood; only the pillows and an armchair near the bed were white. The room was cold, for it seldom had a fire; it was silent because it was far from the nursery and kitchen; gloomy because nobody lived in it. In this room Mr. Reed had died nine years before and since that day nobody liked to go into the room. My stool was near the chimney, the bed was before me; on my right there was a high, dark wardrobe; on my right were the windows, a great looking glass between them repeated all the things in the room. I got up and went to the door. Alas! It was shut and locked. On my way back I had to cross before the looking-glass. All looked colder and darker in it, and the little figure that was looking at me with a white face and eyes full of fear, was like a ghost. I returned to my stool. I sat down and began to think about my life, about John Reed’s tyranny, his sisters’ coldness, Mrs. Reed’s hatred, the servants’ unkindness. Why was I always unhappy? I tried to fulfil every duty, yet I was called naughty and tiresome from morning till noon and everybody scolded me. It was past four o’clock. The afternoon was grey. I heard the rain which was beating against the window and the wind which was blowing in the wood behind the house, and I became cold as a stone. I remembered stories about dead men who left their graves and visited their homes to punish people for their wickedness. What if Mr. Reed left his grave and came back to earth to punish his wife for cruelty to me? Superstition was with me at the moment. I sat and looked at the white bed, at the looking-glass. I wiped my tears and stopped crying, for I was afraid of Mr. Reed. Then I saw a light on the wall. It was probably the light from somebody’s lantern in the street, but my nerves were so shaken with fear that I thought it was a light from another world. My heart beat quick, my head was hot; I thought I heard some sounds. Something seemed near me. I ran to the door, shook the lock and screamed. After that I remember nothing.

J Fourteen-year-old Henry, who tended my garden last summer, is the world’s slowest-moving creature. In desperation one day I exclaimed: “Henry! Is there anything you can do fast?” “Yes”, he drawled, “I get tired fast.”

  1. I like my present home, because it’s in the suburbs and there are a lot of trees around it, though it’s only half an hour’s ride from the centre of the town. It’s sort of the end of no-through road, so very few people drive past. It’s an old cottage, it’s got an open fire and I’m a bit of a romantic, so I like that.
  2. I have got a nice flat in the middle of London. I work there so it’s convenient to get to work and not to waste time in traffic jams. It is located on the top floor, but I don’t mind it, because the windows face Trafalgar Square with the Nelson Column in the centre. So the view is fantastic. When I get tired of noise I visit my father who owns a small chalet in the Alps. But still I’m urban and like London’s vanity.
  3. I moved into the country two years ago when I retired from the company and decided to live for pleasure. My present home is a detached house with an orchard at the back and a grass-plot with a summer house at the front. I really like to live in something very old with lots of land and lots of space. There is a river in 10 minutes’ walk from there and I like to wander on it in the evenings.
  4. I like my present home, because it’s a flat near the City…about ten minutes out of the City and that’s very convenient for walking or cycling in. It’s also got a lot of amenities close to it: there is a swimming-pool, a cinema, a library, theatres. There are some very good markets and shops as well. That’s why I like the present flat I’ve got.
