“The next, please,” said the nurse. The next patient, a middle-aged man, entered the consulting room. The doctor was sitting behind his writing-desk and smoking. As soon as the patient caught sight of the cigar in the medical man’s mouth, he turned round, and left the room without a word. The doctor was speechless for a moment, then he had the man called back. “Why did you run away?” he asked in surprise. “Well, you see,” said the man pointing to the cigar in the physician’s hand, “how can l trust my health to a person, who doesn’t take care of his own?” And with these words he left for ever.

The Life of a Country Girl

Susan Morrison lives in a small Welsh town. It’s a lovely place to live in. But it’s not the best place if you want to find a job. Some young people leave home and look for work in big cities of England.

Susan wanted to be a hairdresser. She left school when she was 16, and learned hairdressing at the college for two years. But she couldn’t find a job. She went to London, but there was nothing there. She tried farm work, but she didn’t like it.

Now she’s working at Laura Ashley factory in Newtown, a beautiful Welsh hill town. There she makes pretty dresses that she loves to wear herself. Susan has an industrial job, but she still lives the life of a country girl. Her hours are long: she leaves home at six fifty-five on the factory bus to start work at eight, and she does finish until five in the evening. But when she is free, she spends her time with horses. She’s lucky. Her uncle is a farmer. He keeps horses.

My day off

The last two days of the week are Saturday and Sunday. They are called the weekend. People don’t go to work on weekends. But students and pupils have only one day off. It is Sunday.

Weekend is my favourite time of the week because I don’t go to the college. I think Sunday is the best day of the week. On this day I wake up later than usual. And sometimes I don’t get up till nine or ten o’clock. As soon as I get up I air the room, do my bed and do morning exercises. Then I have breakfast and help my Mother to clear away the dishes and wash them.

On Sundays I usually do shopping. My Mother tells me what to buy, I take a shopping bag and go shopping. As a rule I go to the shop near my house. There are many departments in this shop and I can buy different goods there. Then I go to the baker’s and buy bread and rolls. I also buy milk at the dairy department.

In the evening our family gets together. We have supper, watch TV or read books. Reading is my hobby. I like to read detective stories or books of modern writers. At about eleven o’clock I go to bed.
