You will be engaged in writing as a regular activity and learn strategies to continue your skills development. The course focuses on intensive practice to develop paragraphs of different written formats through multiple drafts. Mind that only in-class writings are scored.

Quick Checks / Unit tests / Quizzes

There will be many quizzes-tests (probably one almost every unit period). Tests will relate to current and previous topics. A test may be given at any time during any class period immediately after a class, at the beginning or end of a class, etc. Tests will be given only to those students who are present when the tests are passed out.

Current Work:

Current assessed work can include quick checks, recorded pair or individual talk or any other task, such as unit presentations or class discussions, which you will be informed about in advance.

Unit presentations and class discussions are viewed as extra-curricular activities and mean preparation and presentations in groups or individually. The task is generally connected with the current unit in the course book but means introducing additional materials from the Internet or other resources. While presenting you should remember that accuracy and fluency as well as presentation techniques are assessed. The presentation will be assessed on the basis of its listener-friendliness (see the ‘Tips for making presentations’, Appendix 1).

Current assessed work might also include online learning, which will be marked and scored by the tutor.

Word Lists:

Though not scored, word lists are due for submission within a week after the unit completion. The vocabulary should be new for you and of the appropriate level. The lists are to be submitted in the written form with definitions (you may also want to include examples with the selected items or translations). They will be evaluated on the basis of its reader-friendliness (see the ‘Word list tips’, Appendix 2).

Home Reading (Reading Groups):

In this course you will work on strengthening your reading skills, developing your reading vocabulary, and improving your reading speed and comprehension of a variety of texts, making progress towards skillful and independent reading. You will be supplied with a list of short stories by English and American writers which you will have to read thoroughly. The discussion of the stories will be organized in two reading groups. It is obligatory to have the Reading Journal for each part of the reading group.

Class Attendance Policy:

Regular class attendance is expected as well as preparation for in-class activities. The tutor reserves the right to subtract up to 25% of a student’s final grade for engaging in what is believed poor class attendance and preparation. Throughout the course feedback will be provided to any student who may be the object of this penalty so that appropriate behavioural changes can be made by that student to avoid the penalty.

Plagiarism

The tutors’ policy on plagiarism applies in this course. You will be questioned if your work does not appear to be your own. Keep all notes, outlines, drafts, and finished assignments so that you can demonstrate that writing you have submitted is your own work, should any question of plagiarism arise.
