MY NATIVE TOWN

Tyumen, the so-called capital of Siberia, was founded in 1586. Many years ago it was a small dirty town. There were no fine buildings there.

Today you can see a different picture. The centre of the city has been reconstructed. The town has greatly increased in size. Many new districts have appeared. Hundred of new blocks of flats, various cultural institutions, new streets and parks have changed the city beyond the recognition. Its population is more than five hundred thousand now. The main street of Tyumen is Respubliki Street. Shops, hotels, restaurants, cinemas are situated in the street.

There is the Public Library where you can find all the conveniences for work and study.

There are some squares in Tyumen. The largest and the most beautiful is the 400th Tyumen anniversary square.

Tyumen is a cultural, educational and business centre. There are a lot of secondary schools, technical schools and institutions of higher education.

The cultural life of the city is rather rich. There are some cinemas, three professional theatres, some Palaces of Culture. The Drama Theatre stages plays of classics and contemporary playwrights. There is the Puppet Theatre. Symphony concerts are performed in the Philarmony Hall. There are not so many museums in Tyumen but their expositions are rather rich and interesting.

My native town

I live in Tyumen which is the oldest Siberian town. It was founded in 1586 at the site of a Tatar settlement called Chinghi-Tura. A wooden fortress was built on the higher bank of the Tura River. Soon Tyumen became the town of merchants. All houses of the ancient Tyumen were made of wood that is why the fires happened very often. The first stone houses were built in Tyumen only at the end of the 18th century. Now Tyumen is a modern beautiful city with broad green streets and high buildings.

At the present Tyumen is the capital of Tyumen region, which is the biggest region in Russia. It is rich in natural resources, such as oil, gas, timber and others.

Tyumen is one of the cultural and industrial centres of West Siberia. There are many institutes, universities, colleges and schools. Every citizen of Tyumen can get any kind of higher education without leaving Tyumen. The main higher educational institutions are Tyumen State University, Tyumen State University of Oil and Gas, the Academy of Medicine, the International Institute of Economics and Law, and the Institute of Arts and Culture.

There is also a great number of plants and factories in Tyumen. Their production is well known throughout over Russia.
