ALGAE
1. Algae are groups of relatively simple living aquatic organisms that capture light energy through photosynthesis, using it to convert inorganic substances into organic matter. They are photosynthetic organisms that occur in most habitats. Algae vary from small and single-celled to complex multicellular species, such as the Giant kelps that grow to 65 meters in length. All lack leaves, roots, flowers, seeds and other, and other organ structures that characterize higher plants.
2. They are distinguished from other protozoa in that they are photoautotrophic although this is not a hard and fast distinction as some groups contain members that are mixotrophic, deriving energy both from photosynthesis and uptake of organic carbon either by osmotrophy, myzotrophy, or phagotrophy. All algae have photosynthetic machinery ultimately derived from the cyanobacteria, and so produce oxygen as a by-product of photosynthesis, unlike non-cyanobacterial photosynthetic bacteria. It is estimated that algae produce about 73 to 87 percent of the net global production of oxygen − which is available to humans and other animals for respiration.
3. Algae are usually found in damp places or bodies of water and thus are common in terrestrial as well as aquatic environments. However, terrestrial algae are usually rather inconspicuous and far more common in moist, tropical regions than dry ones, because algae lack vascular tissues and other adaptations to live on land. Algae can, however, endure dryness and other conditions in symbiosis with a fungus as lichen.
4. The various sorts of algae play significant roles in aquatic ecology. Microscopic forms that live suspended in the water column – called phytoplankton – provide the food base for most marine food chains. In very high densities these algae may discolour the water and outcompete or poison other life forms. Seaweeds grow mostly in shallow marine waters, however some have been recorded to a depth of 300 m. Some are used as human food or harvested for useful substances such as agar or fertilizer.

EVAPORATED MILK
1. Evaporated milk is a shelf-stable canned milk product with about 60% of the water removed from fresh milk. It differs from condensed milk which contains sugar. Condensed milk requires less processing because the added sugar inhibits bacterial growth. Evaporated milk was popular before refrigeration as a substitute for perishable fresh milk, because it could be reconstituted by adding water. In present times, household use is most often for desserts and baking. When mixed with an equal amount of water, it can be substituted for fresh milk in recipes. Evaporated milk will last for weeks, months, and sometimes years on the shelf depending on the brand.
2. Evaporated milk is the liquid food obtained by partial removal of water only from milk. It contains not less than 6.5 percent by weight of milkfat, not less than 16.5 percent by weight of milk solids not fat, and not less than 23 percent by weight of total milk solids. It is homogenized. It is sealed in a container, processed by heat to prevent spoilage.
3. Evaporated milk is fresh, homogenized milk from which 60 percent of the water has been removed. It is then chilled, fortified with vitamins and stabilizers, packaged, and finally sterilized. A slightly caramelized flavor results from the high heat process, as does a slightly darker color than fresh milk. The evaporation process also concentrates the nutrients and the calories. Thus, for the same weight, undiluted evaporated milk contains more calories than fresh milk.
4. The invention of evaporated milk followed three decades later when John B. Meyenberg emigrated to the U.S. from Switzerland where he had devised the process. Meyenberg, son of John B. Meyenberg, was the first American to evaporate goat’s milk, that is easier to digest than cow's milk, and a necessary alternative for people like himself who were allergic to cow’s milk. In Malaysia, evaporated milk contains palm oil. Also it is added in brewed tea to make Teh See.

1. Vitamin is any of several organic substances that usually are separated into water-soluble and fat-soluble groups. The substances commonly known as vitamins are diverse in chemical structure and function. Originally defined as organic compounds obtainable in a normal diet and capable of maintaining life, vitamins are distinct from carbohydrates, fats, and proteins in function, as well as in the quantities in which organisms require them. If a vitamin is absent from the diet, a specific deficiency disease may develop.

The term “vitamin” originated from “vitamine,” a word first used in 1911 to designate a group of compounds considered vital for life; each was thought to have a nitrogen-containing component known as an amine. The final e of vitamine was dropped when it was discovered that not all of the vitamins contain nitrogen, and, therefore, not all are amines. The term “accessory food factor” sometimes is used instead of vitamin to refer to these substances.
3. Since they generally cannot be synthesized by an animal and must be obtained from the diet or from some synthetic source, vitamins are called essential nutrients. Vitamin C can be synthesized by some organisms in sufficient amounts so that the dietary requirement is eliminated; vitamin C usually is considered a vitamin, however, because it must be included in the diet of man. Vitamins are distinct from many other compounds, which, although indispensable for proper animal functions, can be synthesized in adequate quantities.
4. A provitamin is similar in structure to a specific vitamin and can be converted to it by a few metabolic reactions. Antivitamins are compounds that prevent the normal function of certain vitamins. Antivitamins may act by binding a vitamin, by destroying a vitamin, or by inhibiting the coenzyme function of a vitamin.

1.Ecology had no firm beginnings. It evolved from the natural history of Greeks. They first described the interrelationships between organisms and between their nonliving environment. Later foundations for modern ecology were laid in the early work of plant and animal physiologists.
2.Modern ecology is now focused on the concept of the ecosystem, a functional unit consisting of interacting organisms and all aspects of the environment in any specific area. It contains both interacting organisms and all aspects of the environment in any specific area. It contains both the nonliving and living components through which nutrients are cycled and energy flows. To accomplish this cycling and flow, ecosystems must possess a number of structured interrelationships between soil, water, and nutrients, on the one hand, and producers, consumers, and decomposers on the other.
3.One of the major problem areas of modern technological society is that of preserving a healthy environmental balance. Though man has been damaging his environment for centuries by over-cutting trees and farming too intensively, and though some protective measures, such as the establishment of national forests and wildlife sanctuaries, were taken decades ago, great increases in population and in the intensity of industrialization are promoting a world-wide ecological crises. This includes are dangers involved in destruction of the equatorial rain forests, the careless exploitation of minerals by open-mining techniques, and the pollution of the oceans by radioactive waste and of the atmosphere by combustion products. These include oxides of sulphur and nitrogen, which produce acid rain, and carbon dioxide, which may affect the world’s climate through the so-called greenhouse effect.
4. The great public concern about pollution in the advanced nations is both overdue and welcome. Once more, however, it needs to be said that the fault for this waste-making abuse of technology lies with man himself rather than the tools he uses. For all his intelligence, man in communities behaves with a lack of respect for his environment that is both short-sighted and potentially suicidal.
