1. Oceans and continents exemplify the highest-order landforms. Landform elements are parts of a high-order landforms that can be further identified and systematically given a cohesive definition such as hill-tops, shoulders, saddles, etc. Landform elements also include seascape and oceanic waterbody interface features, such as the great ocean basins under the thin skin of water. Hence, the spatial distribution of landforms is often scale-dependent as in the case for soils and geological strata.
4. A number of factors, ranging from plate tectonics to erosion and deposition, can generate and affect landforms. Biological factors can also influence landforms – for example, note the role of vegetation in the development of dune systems and salt marshes, and the work of corals and algae in the formation of coral reefs.

1. The Earth is the only planet presently known to support life, and its natural features are the subject of many fields of scientific research. Earth is estimated to have formed 4.54 billion years ago from the solar nebula, along with the Sun and other planets. Outgassing and volcanic activity produced the primordial atmosphere. Condensing water vapour, most or all of which came from ice delivered by comets, produced the oceans and other water sources. Since the Cambrian explosion there have been five distinctly identified mass extinctions. The last mass extinction occurred some 65 million years ago, when a meteoric collision probably triggered the extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs and other large reptiles, but spared small animals such as mammals, which then resembled shrews. Over the past 65 million years, mammalian life diversified.
3. Several million years ago, a species of small African ape gained the ability to stand upright. The subsequent advent of human life, and the development of agriculture and further civilization allowed humans to affect the Earth more rapidly than any previous life form, affecting both the nature and quantity of other organisms as well as global climate.
4. The present era is classified as part of a mass extinction event, the Holocene extinction event, the fastest ever to have occurred. Some scientists, such as E.O. Wilson of Harvard University, predict that the human destruction of the biosphere could cause the extinction of one-half of all species in the next 100 years. The extent of the current extinction event is still being researched, debated and calculated by biologists.

1. Paleoclimatology is the study and description of ancient climates. Since direct observation of climate are nor available before the 19th century, paleoclimates are inferred from proxy variables that include non-biotic evidence such as sediments found in lake beds and ice cores, and biotic evidence such as tree rings and coral. 3. Earth has undergone periodic climate shifts in the past, including four major ice ages. These consisting of glacial periods where conditions are colder than normal, separated by interglacial periods. The accumulation of snow and ice during a glacial period increases the surface albedo, reflecting more of the Sun’s energy unto space and maintaining a lower atmospheric temperature. Increases in greenhouse gases, such as by volcanic activity, can increase the global temperature and produce an interglacial. Suggested causes of ice age periods include the positions of the continents, variations in the Earth’s orbit, changes in the solar output, and volcanism.
4. Climate models use quantitative methods to simulate the interactions of the atmosphere, oceans, land surface and ice. They are used for a variety of purposes from study of the dynamics of the weather and climate system to projections of future climate. All climate models balance, or very nearly balance, incoming energy as short wave electromagnetic radiation to the earth with outgoing energy as long wave (infrared) electromagnetic radiation from the earth. Any imbalance results in a change in the average temperature of the earth.

BIOCHEMISTRY
1. Biochemistry is a field of science concerned with the chemical substances and processes that occur in plants, animals, and microorganisms. Specifically, it involves the quantitative determination and structural analysis of the organic compounds that comprise the basic constituents of cells (proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids) and of those that play a key role in chemical reactions vital to life (nucleic acids, vitamins and hormones).
2. Biochemistry entails the study of all the complexly interrelated chemical changes that occur within the cell – e.g. those relating to protein synthesis, the conversion of food to energy, and the transmission of hereditary characteristics. Both the cell’s degradation of substances that release energy and buildup of complex molecules that sore energy or act as substrates or catalysts for biological chemical reactions are studied in detail by biochemists. Biochemists also study the regulatory mechanisms within the body that govern these and other processes.
3. Biochemistry lies in the border area between the biological and physical sciences. Accordingly, it makes use of many of the techniques common to physiology and those integral to analytical, organic, and physical chemistry. The field of biochemistry has become so large that many subspecialities are recognized, as, for example clinical chemistry and nutrition.
` 4. Molecular biology, the study of large molecules – for example, proteins, nucleic acids, and carbohydrates – that are essential to life processes is a field closely allied to biochemistry. Taken as a whole, modern biochemistry has outgrown its earlier status of an applied science and has acquired a place among the pure, or theoretical, sciences.

1. At the beginning of World War II it was possible to recognise a number of major medical specialities, including internal medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, pathology, anaesthesiology, ophthalmology, surgery, orthopaedic surgery, plastic surgery, psychiatry and neurology, radiology, and urology. The knowledge of pathology has been greatly extended, mainly by the use of the electron microscope; similarly microbiology, which includes bacteriology, expanded with the growth of such other subfields as virology (the study of viruses) and mycology (the study of yeasts and fungi in medicine). Biochemistry, sometimes called clinical chemistry or chemical pathology, has contributed to the knowledge of disease, especially in the field of genetics where genetic engineering has become a key to curing some of the most difficult diseases. Haematology also expanded after World War II with the development of electron microscopy.
4. Contributions to medicine have come from such fields as psychology and sociology especially in such areas as mental disorders and mental handicaps. Clinical pharmacology has led to the development of more effective drugs and to the identification of adverse reactions. More recently established medical specialities are those of preventive medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation, family practice, and nuclear medicine. In the United States every medical specialist must be certified by a board composed of members of the speciality in which certification is sought. Some type of peer certification is required in most countries.
