At transferring the patient from the stretcher to the bed you must properly put the stretcher. They are put so as the porters transporting patient do it the in shortest route. At that you should take into account the size of ward, presence of available space near bed.
At shifting, the main thing is not to drop the patient, therefore it is desirable t participation of physically strong women, if possible, men. In this regard, the medical staff should be guided by the principles of proper biomechanics at lifting weights.
Methods of transferring of critically ill patients:
· parallel way- is parallel to the bed at a distance of 2-3 meters from it, head end of the stretcher to the foot end of the bed;
· angle way: the foot end of the stretcher is put perpendicular to the head end of a bed or Vice versa, by the head end of the stretcher perpendicular to the foot end of the bed;
· series: head end of the stretcher is put to the foot end of the bed;
· close: by the head end of the stretcher parallel to the head end of the bed (Fig. 16).
Figure 16.
The location of the stretchers and beds at shifting the patient
а - at the head end of the bed, perpendicular to it, by the foot end of the stretcher to to the bed; b - parallel to the bed, by the head end of the stretcher to the foot end of the bed; c - at the foot end of the bed, perpendicular to it, by the head end of the stretcher to the bed.
Before lifting weights the feet are placed at a distance of 30 cm from each other, at that one foot is slightly pushed ahead. This situation provides good support without allowing you to lose balance and fall. Before you lift a person or an object, make sure that the patient is at a distance, which does not require leaning ahead. At lifting, you should press the patient to your body, keeping the vertical position of the upper part of the body and to bend his legs only at the knees. Raise the patient smoothly, without jerks. If you want to turn, you should firstly lift the patient, and then, relying on the feet, gently turn, not bending the body.
An order of transporting the patient from gurney on bed:
1.Put the head end of the stretcher (gurney) perpendicular to the foot end of the bed. If the area of the chamber is small, put the stretcher parallel to the bed.
2.The medical staff stands between wheelchair and bed, by face to the patient (in parallel way).
3. Bring your hands under the patient: one hospital cleaner brings his hands under patients’ head and bladesand; the second - under the pelvis and upper thighs, and the third brings under the middle of the thighs and shins. If transportation is conducted by two hospital cleaners, one of them brings his hands under the neck and blades of the patient, the second brings under lower back and knees (Fig. 17). |

а - transferring the patient from the stretcher to the bed threesome,
b – transferring the patient from the stretcher to the bed together.
4. By simultaneously agreed motions to lift the patient, together with him turn to 90° (if the stretcher is placed parallel - 180°) to the side of the bed and lay on patient.
5. If the stretcher close to the bed, to hold the stretcher on bed level, together (or threesome) to drag the patient to the edge of the stretcher on the sheet, gently lifting him up and put the patient on the bed.
In daily work at moving patients medical personnel most often use the method of shifting the patient from the gurney to the bed at an angle. The shifting of the patient at closely attached stretcher to the bed requires some effort and therefore may not always be permissed (Fig. 18).
