I love going to my favorite coffee shop...but I can never seem to make a decision...

My favorite thrift shop, right near the garlic restaurant. I love coming here...it's almost like my own personal therapy...do you think Dr. Bantam will mind? sigh....

Born on the same day as her best friend, Ellowyne Wilde, and both under their own strange circumstances, Prudence Moody is the newest doll with an upbeat mood - and the bright spot in Ellowyne’s sometimes woeful life. With her undeveloped psychic sense, and her own unique fashion style, it’s no wonder she and Ellowyne are best friends.

Play time with Sybil. She's playing, right? Okay, where did I put the band aids?

I live in my grandmother’s house, which sits directly on a fault line – it’s always a guessing game. I love San Francisco…

I like to collect antique brooches, mainly because they frighten my brother Freddie.

I like to listen to music. This is one of my favorites – it’s Janet Klein Performing Obscure, Naughty, and Lovely songs from the 1910's, 20's and 30's. with singing and ukulele accompaniment in a girl-next door Depression Era style.

"I think this couple would probably be my best friends...well if they were real and could talk."

“A gift from Rufus? Perhaps. They make me think of brother Freddie – he loves to skydive.”.

"My hero. I sometime feel like she looks….kind of desperate, unknowing, fashionable, yet not too trendy in a Twilight Zone kind of way."

" So many surprises in San Francisco. I have trouble with the decision-making process."

My favorite candies - Grandmother says they put hair on your chest, but I'm not sure what that means. I just like them because they take a long time to eat, which gives me something to do.

ABOUT RUFUS RUTTER™

A friend of Ellowyne’s since seventh grade, where they met at Briermier Academy, Rufus is the handyman employed at her Grandmother’s Victorian house, where Ellowyne lives.

Always cheerful and at the same time a little shy, Rufus harbors a secret pain – he loves Ellowyne with all of his heart, but so far, his love has gone unrequited. He writes her endless poems that express his deepest feelings, but somehow never get sent. Will he ever have the courage to confess?

Rufus has a lot to say, but we just never knew it! He recently ran into Dr. Bantam at the Home Depot and had a chat. He wants to clear up a misunderstanding that happened with Amber - and a kiss. We hope Ellowyne understands - enjoy!

My Side of the Story - March 2013

Recently, all the friends got together for coffee in the Embarcadero - Rufus, Ellowyne, Pru, Lizette, and Amber. Of course Amber had to cause drama. After saying something rude to Ellowyne, Rufus tried to stick up for her - but Amber, always wanting the spotlight - just stood up and gave Rufus a huge kiss and invited him for ice cream at Fisherman's Wharf - and he went!

Everyone was in shock - and no one saw it coming. When Ellowyne relayed the event to Dr. Bantam during her most recent therapy session, well, even Dr. B was shocked!

Now finally we hear Rufus' side of the story...as told to Dr. Bantam who he happened to run into recently at the Home Depot...

"Rufus, Rufus Rutter - is that you?" Dr. Bantam couldn't believe it when she ran into the shy young man. She'd met him once before when he came to walk Ellowyne home from one of her therapy sessions. Dr. B was always fond of Rufus, and could tell just by the way he looked at Ellowyne that he had feelings for her. If only she could make Ellowyne see how perfect Rufus was for her - it might help her ennui.

At first Rufus didn't recognize the older woman, but quickly remembered their encounter at her office. "Hi Dr. Bantam - how are you?"

They exchanged a few pleasantries about tools and such, but Dr. Bantam was really curious about the Rufus and Amber situation, so against her better judgment, she invited Rufus for coffee. "Well, I guess I could go - sure, no problem." He was hesitant, and couldn't imagine why Ellowyne's therapist wanted to have coffee with him. What would they even talk about? But he didn't want to be rude, so they walked across the parking lot to a cafe.

Dr. Bantam ordered hot tea and a scone, and Rufus ordered a regular coffee. They found a quiet corner table and sat down. Rufus was nervous.

"I must say, Rufus, it's so good to see you. Ellowyne tells me about her friends sometimes, and it's always interesting. You all seem to get along pretty good, at least that's what it seems." Dr. B was obviously trying to steer the conversation to where she wanted...the dreaded Amber.

Rufus looked a bit uncomfortable, and shifted in his chair. "Um, I guess you could say that. For the most part, we get along." Dr. B raised an eyebrow and asked, "For the most part?" "Well, yeah, I mean Pru is great, and Lizette is really friendly and fun, and of course Ellowyne is great, but not so sure about Amber. I'm sure Ellowyne has told you about her." Rufus finished and took a gulp of his coffee. It burnt his mouth, but he tried to act cool.

"Yes, Ellowyne has mentioned a bit of tension with Amber at times. Anything you want to tell me about? I am a therapist, you know." She said this with such a warm and caring smile that Rufus decided to tell her about what happened at the coffee shop the other day. He was still feeling troubled by the whole situation and was worried sick that Ellowyne hated him.

So after shifting in his seat, taking two gulps of his coffee, clearing his throat, and then sitting up straight, he finally came out with it.

"Well, we did have an issue - Amber and me. And I think everyone is thinking something that's not true, and I'm kind of upset of it." Dr. B told him to go on. Rufus explained the situation, right up until the point where he and Amber left for ice cream. And he told it just like Ellowyne had recounted the event - kiss and all.

"So are you saying that you and Amber are an item?" Dr. B asked. Rufus couldn't respond fast enough. "No! I mean really? Amber? She's just jealous of Ellowyne and she totally used me to get back at her. I was so stunned by the whole thing I just went along with her. And I really don't know why, Dr. Bantam. I was just stupid, I guess. I don't even like Amber, and I think Ellowyne must hate me now." The pain in his voice was heartfelt.

"Don't worry, Rufus. I don't think Ellowyne hates you at all, perhaps she was just surprised. It's always nice to receive attention - even if it's from the wrong person." Rufus looked at Dr. Ba and smiled. She was obviously very observant.

She went on. "You should just talk to her and explain the misunderstanding. I'm sure things will be fine." Rufus was skeptical. "I don't even know what I would say, Dr. B. For some reason I get a little tongue-tied around Ellowyne."

And with that, Dr. B smiled and sat back in her chair knowing that everything was once again right with Ellowyne's world.

* * *

Dear Gram,

Thanks for the letter. I still wish you'd get a computer - I think you'd love it and it would be easier for me to answer your letters. So, how's everything in the mid-west? I hear you had a pretty good winter and no snow. That's great for you but I bet the skiers weren't too happy!

Okay, to answer your questions. Yes, I'm taking classes at the college. I can't go full time just yet - you know our financial situation. I have the same amount of hours at the high school as I did during the summer, so that really helps with the money for school. It's a little weird to be working at the high school as an assistant janitor with dad - some of my friends give me a hard time about it, but I just try to keep my goals in mind. My plan is to put away enough money to go to school full time in a couple of years. I did get a scholarship, but it's not enough, so I'm sticking to my plan.

And no, I'm not dating; and no, there is really no one special. Okay, I take that back. There is a girl and her name is Ellowyne. I think you may know her family - dad did some work at her Grandmother Emily's house. She's a senior and she's really nice and we hang out with the same group of friends.

From what I know, Ellowyne hasn't had an easy life - her mother died not long ago and her father has some legal troubles. She's always nice and friendly no matter what she's going through, and I really like hanging out with her, but for now we're just friends.

And yes, I will say 'hi' to Prudence for you. She's as crazy as ever and her mom says to give you her best next time I speak to you.

There is a new girl at school that we've all become friends with. Her name is Lizette - really nice girl. She's from New Orleans and has this great accent. She's already had a run in with Amber Stanhope (I think I told you about her). Anyway, Lizette really made Amber look like a fool, so I don't think Amber is going to pull her usual antics on her, although who knows? Amber definitely doesn't like to be challenged.

Jasper is fine, but I haven't seen too much of him lately. His job is keeping him busy and did I tell you - he's pre-med? Yeah, so he's either working or studying. He's the best roommate there is - he's never there!

Guess that's it for now. I hope we can get out to see you this summer. I know dad would love it. Anyway, take care of yourself, Gram!

Love, Rufus

P.S. Get a computer!

In denim blues I walk on by
My beautiful Ellowyne – I hope to spy;
Deep down the ache, a heart filled with pain
For a love unrequited – must I pine in vain?

The first time I saw her, a young girl so sad
In quirky clothes, she was always well clad;
But something about her made me stop and stare
For no other girl would ever compare

My heart’s been so filled with love and desire
A smile, a glance is all that’s required;
My day is complete…I can get through the pain
Why doesn’t she see the love I contain?

For now I’ll go on holding onto this love
With help from the moon and the stars up above,
For Ellowyne Wilde – my devotion is true
Requited or not… I will always love you…

- Rufus
