Executive summary
This report describes one of the most fantastic places in Russia – Altai Region. It`s a huge developing region, which has a variety of historical places, cultural sights and appealing atmosphere. Thus, the number of foreign tourists has increased over last 10 years. The purpose of the report is to find out what type of attractions and facilities are available for the UK visitors and identify relevant target market.
Introduction
Altai Region is a federal district of Russia, which borders with Kazakhstan, Novosibirsk and Kemerovo areas. The administrative centre of Altai Region is Barnaul city. Currently, the population is 2,419,755. Altai Region differs from other areas by its specific climate: hot summers and severe winters. This beautiful region is a nice place to visit for both inbound and outbound tourists.
Background to Altai Region as a tourist destination
Altai Region was found on the 28th of September in the 1937. The Region consists of 12 cities: Barnaul, Biysk, Aleisk, Belokurikha, Gornyak, Zarinsk, Zmeinogorsk, Kamen-na-Obi, Novoaltaisk, Rubcovsk, Slavgorod and Yarovoe. Altai Region is famous for its rich heritage of natural resources and agricultural industries. Brooke (2013) states:” The ethnic Russians and Altai who live here increasingly see their future prosperity linked to upmarket eco-tourism”.
Attractions
Altai Region is famous for its natural heritage: beautiful mountains, forests and diverse natural landscapes, which can be used as the basis for eco-tourism. Please, see appendix 1. Altai is a very popular tourist destination, particularly for adventure tourists interested in fishing, hunting and mountaineering. Please, see appendix 2. In addition, there is a great number of museums, theatres, interesting exhibitions, large shopping centres and restaurants with international cuisines.
Transport
There is an international airport named by German Titov, which is located in Barnaul city. It takes 20 minutes to travel from the airport to the city centre. Generally, there are no traffic congestions in Altai Region as all cities are not too big. Hence, you do not have any obstacles moving around the region. Additionally, you can use all the public transport, such as: buses, trolleybuses, trams and fixed route taxis for only 30 p per travel. Furthermore, there are lots of taxi companies operating 24/7. The average cost per travel around the city is 2-3 pounds.
Accommodation
Each city in Altai Region has a great number of resorts, which provide its customers with all necessary facilities at reasonable prices. UK visitors will benefit from the friendly atmosphere, excellent service and international cuisine as well as traditional Russian dishes. Please, see appendix 3. In addition, you can hire an apartment, which is much cheaper than hotels.
Ancillary Services
Concerning ancillary services, it should be said that there is a great number of them. Firstly, the international airport offers car parking and storage for luggage as well as currency exchange and car hire service. Secondly, all cities in Altai Region have banks with high trained staff and cash machines available for customers 24/7. Lastly, there are many excursions for clients in Altai Region with professional tour guides. Please, see appendix 4.
Tourist types and segmentation
It should be noted that mostly allocentric tourists will enjoy travelling to Altai Region as it will take you at least 2 flights to get to the final destination, which may be very exhausting. Moreover, foreigners could find Russian mentality very different. As Altai Region is famous for its sport activities, it is strongly recommended for its tourists to be fit and active, whatever their age.
Conclusion
To draw the conclusion, I may say that Altai Region is a great place to visit. UK tourists will definitely experience many positive emotions and see numerous impressive and unforgettable sights.
Recommendations
It is recommended for the UK tour operator to book for visitors all inclusive hotels in the area of natural beauty. The best prices for accommodation, flight tickets and excursions are usually during the period from April till June.
