TELEPHONE

Telephone is the most convenient means of communication in our everyday life

and business.

Having a telephone at home means a lot of advantages. If you want to ring smb. up, just pick up a receiver, dial the number and wait for an answer. First of all, you can get in touch with your relatives and friends without going out. If they live in another city or abroad, you can book a trunk call. Having dialed the necessary number, you can make an appointment with the person you want: your business partner, doctor, or dentist. If necessary, you can cancel it. You can make a hotel or a restaurant reservation if you want to be accommodated in another town or invite your friend for a festive dinner. If you dial the Information service. you can get any information you want: the necessary private and office telephone numbers (directory inquiries). any tourist information, the train timetable and what not. By the way, nowadays you can get the information on almost anything under the sun. In London, e.g., you can listen to poets reading their own poems, get the recipe of the day if you don't know what to cook for dinner. Your children can hear a bedtime story before going to bed. Do you have problems so big that you think you can't go on? You'll find understanding, help, and advice if you call a special service. This is especially useful for teenagers. Pop- music, Telegrams Service, Speaking Clock (time) and weather forecast are at your disposal. In case of emergency, you can call a fire brigade, police or ambulance. If you are in a hurry and afraid to miss your train, you can order a taxi by telephone, too. If you're hungry and don't feel like cooking dinner, you can order pizza (in case you like junky food) and it will be delivered within half an hour or so.

So telephone can be of great help to you. But having it at home means a lot of disadvantages, too.

Many people think it is a pest and a time- waster. It may create unnecessary suspense and anxiety, when an unexpected call doesn't come, or when you keep ringing a number that is always engaged. Besides, it tends to ring when you least want it to ring - when you are asleep, or in the middle of a meal or a conversation, or when you are just going out, or having a bath. So telephone bells, which are usually too noisy, by the way, violate the privacy of your life. Sometimes you rush to the telephone dripping from the bath or chewing me table, or dazed from bed, only to be told that you are a wrong number.

VIII. Translate into English and reproduce the following dialogues:
