Introduction

As it is generally known, a language is neither a stable system of signs, nor an isolated means of speech. It is a dynamic complex structure that is immediately dependent on the phenomena in society. Various economical, cultural or scientific events may cause changes in vocabulary. That is why the main goal of linguistics is to research all the possible changes of lexis.

Talking about Dan Brown and his literary and cultural heritage, in particular his novel “The Da Vinci Code” is very interesting and exciting. Brown’s novels, which are treasure hunts, set in a 24-hour time period, feature the recurring themes of cryptography, keys, symbols, codes, and conspiracy theories. In addition, Dan Brown has been quite vocal about a number of other literary influences who have inspired his writing.

The author is well-known due to the mystery-detective novel “The Da Vinci Code” which is the bestselling one. Brown’s novels that feature the lead character Robert Langdon include historical themes and Christianity as recurring motifs, and as a result, have generated controversy. Dan Brown states that his books are not anti-Christian and says that “The Da Vinci Code” is simply “an entertaining story that promotes spiritual discussion and debate”. Also he suggests that the very book may be used “as a positive catalyst for introspection and exploration of our faith” [35]. Therefore, Dan Brown’s works are of great interest among translators from all over the world. A. B. Kamianets' rendered the very novel into Ukrainian.

The present research is focused on allusions in Dan Brown’s novel “The Da Vinci Code” and its Ukrainian translation done by A. B. Kamianets'.

Current studies of allusions in philological aspect as an element of intertextuality were presented by such outstanding persons: R. Alter, I. V. Arnold, R. Brauer, I. V. Giubbenet, N. O. Fatieieva, I. S. Khrystenko etc. However, in its translation aspect, allusion was researched only by L. Venuti, V. S. Vynogradov, V. N. Komissarov, M. O. Novykova, A. Popovych, R. P. Zorivchak, L. V. Grek, O. A. Ivanov, O. K. Smyrnov, O. Yu. Abramova, A. G. Mamayeva, B. Porot, Ye. V. Rozen etc.

The topicality of the research paper lies in the fact that intercultural and intertextual understanding of the novel has fundamental role for the translation process. The main point is that it is not enough to know two languages to translate in a proper way. The translator should be knowledgeable in different historical and cultural events, to understand all the peculiarities and secrets of the author’s style etc. In this research an attempt is also made to investigate the importance of the Ukrainian translation for the target audience.

The overall aim of this work is to highlight individual author’s intention and the Biblical allusions he used in the novel and, of course, their reproduction in the translation.

The objectives of this research are as following:

• to study and understand the usage of Biblical allusions both in the original and the translation;

• to contrast the very stylistic device from the original to their translated counterparts in the target language.

The subject of the research paper is the notion of Biblical allusions in the novel “The Da Vinci Code” and its Ukrainian translation done by A. B. Kamianets'.

The object of this work is translation strategy of rendering such a stylistic device as allusion which used in the novel “The Da Vinci Code”.

The research paper consists of introduction, two chapters, conclusions and list of references.

The first chapter contains the important information about allusions. It also gives general information concerning translation strategies for above mentioned notion.

The second chapter includes the analysis of the stylistic device together with defining translation strategies to each and every example. The brightest examples were taken for analysis.

Conclisions concentrate on the summary of this research paper.

List of references consists of theoretical, critical and literary sources.
