Scene 2

New Orleans port, ship’s whistles make loud buzzes from time to time. People are talking and make a constant, but not very loud noise. A little warehouse full of crates is in the scene. Henry and John are sitting on small crates and play cards, using a bigger crate as a table. Henry seems to be winning, he is smiling. John looks angry.

HENRY: Full House! Yeah, I win! Looks like you’ll be paying for me at Sheila’s.

JOHN (with a smirk): Don’t get so excited. You still have a large debt to pay me by the end of the week. And, I guess it is some 10 dollars more. Poker.

HENRY: Damn it! Well, I am pretty low on cash now, y’know. But, I will pay you everything to the last cent. I promise. Just, give me more time.

JOHN (putting his overcoat on): Henry, I am not going to wait any longer than till the end of this week. You’d better hurry.

(John leaves)

HENRY: Well, now I owe John 10 bucks more, so in total I have to return some 320 dollars or something like that. Yeah, I’m gonna have fun trying to find that money in just three days. But it’s not the time to rant. I still have work to do. Those crates won’t get in the ship to France by themselves. So… Back to work, I guess.

(Diana appears, hides behind the warehouse’s main door and starts to stalk Henry. Henry starts to move all the crates to the main door. He looks at Diana, she sighs, when Henry notices her)

HENRY: Excuse me.

(Diana hides deep behind the door)

HENRY: Excuse me, ma’am. Are you lost? Maybe I can help you somehow?

DIANA: (looking at him from behind the door): I… I was just walking around the port and, and… And I got lost in the crowd and… And now I don’t know where to go. Perhaps, you could show me the way back downtown?

HENRY: Yeah, sure. It’s right there (point in the direction of the Downtown)

DIANA: Thank you, but… But I might get lost again. Would you kindly accompany me on my way back home?

HENRY: Sorry, ma’am, but I have some work to do here, or else my old pal John will cut my head off, if you know what I mean.

DIANA: Please sir. Such a strong and brave gentleman like you could take some of his time to help a lady to get home.

HENRY: Since you’ve asked so nicely, I guess I can keep you a company for a while. Let’s go.

DIANA: Great! Follow me!

(Diana runs to the downtown)

HENRY: But ma’am, you told me that… Ah, never mind.

(Henry runs after her)

(For 2-3 seconds nobody is on stage, then John appears)

JOHN: Henry, where the hell are you? I need you to… (He looks around, trying to find Henry) He ran away. This filthy slug thinks he can just go somewhere, leaving his job undone? Who does he think he is?! (He kicks a crate) No, Johnny-boy, calm down. This kid still owes you 323 bucks and 60 cents, and payday is closer than you think. He will return all the money, one way or the other. Just wait for a couple’o days. This fella is too carefree to collect all the money in time. Soon enough he will be spending all of his time carrying crates, while you will just sit and watch. Yes, just two more days, and your life will become much easier, John. Just be patient.

Scene 3

Voodoo shop, everything is in its original disorder, although there are some herbs and bottles and stones and pieces of cloth on the table. Dr. Mortimer is sitting in his chair, facing the audience. He is concentrated on the materials on his table. He mumbles something like a Christian prayer with his hands right above the ingredients. Suddenly he stops, sits comfortably in the chair and sighs

VOICE (mocking DR.MORTIMER): Well, well, I see that this voodoo stuff is becoming very tiring for you after all these years, Mort. Why don’t you have a rest for a couple of days? Just imagine: two days just for you. A little holyday you’ve been dreaming about for decades. Wadda you think?..

DR. MORTIMER: Two days of rest and then the eternity of endless pain and suffering? No, thanks. But this time you are right, this has become tiring for me. After all these years, after endless voodoo rituals, I have grown weaker than ever before, but I am not done yet. I will fulfill the conditions of my contract.
