Imminent
CHARACTERS
DR. MORTIMER IMMINENT – African-American voodoo witch doctor. Wears a shirt with a tie, purple cocktail suit, black shoes, and a cylinder hat. Always walks with a cane as an accessory. Seems very pleasant and willing to help but becomes very cold and emotionless when left alone. Hates people. Looks around 30.
HENRY – a young man (25 yrs), trying to earn money. Always cheerful and enthusiastic. Carefree, doesn’t think about the consequences of his actions. Has gambling problems. Dresses in a very simple manner: shirt, brown vest with bronze buttons, light scarf and pants.
DIANA – a young woman (22 yrs), who fell in love with Henry. Childish but is always worried about something. She makes an impression of a child in a body of an adult. Even her love seems to be puppy love rather than strong feelings. Her appearance, however, is not childish at all– light fur coat (light brown), beige hat with a black feather and black stockings with black poloneck. Always walks with a small purse.
VOICE– mysterious and sarcastic character, never appears on stage. Speaks with intonations of a snake. Always mocks Dr. Mortimer.
JOHN– Henry’s gambling partner. 35 years old. Rude and selfish port worker. Extremely greedy. Wears long grey overcoat. He is always angry, even for no particular reason.
ELLEN AND SUSIE – local gossip girls. Narrative voice, telling the audience some detail about characters.
SETTING
Louisiana, New Orleans, 1930’s
Prologue
Sheila’s pub, we can hear people talking in the background. Room is well lit. ELENE AND SUSIE are sitting in the front. We see them in the middle of their conversation.
ELLEN: Yeah, so Julia was seeing this guy Tom. Oh my gosh, he is so darlin’. He is a surgeon in Dr. Ned’s clinic.
SUSIE: Dr. Ned’s clinic is the best in town, if you ask me.
ELLEN: Right, but that’s all because of Dr. Ned’s efforts. He rarely leaves his office.
SUSIE: Oh, by the way, have you heard about this guy, the voodoo doctor, whose shop is down the street. They say he never leaves his shop.
ELLEN: I don’t believe in all that voodoo stuff. He’s probably another charlatan, who tricks babes in the woods to get in their pockets and take their money.
SUSIE: Well, I’ve heard that he is a real voodoo doctor and that he made a deal with the Devil to live forever. Old Ma Dukes told me that when she was a child, he moved to New Orleans and opened his shop. Do you realize how old the guy must be?
ELLEN: Do you really believe everything Ma Dukes says. Come on, she is, what, 90 years old? She’s just senile. This doctor probably moved here a couple of years ago.
SUSIE: But they say that he can make your dreams come true. He can make you rich, he can make you incredibly lucky. Some people say he can even find a true love for you.
ELLEN: Who told you that? Another drunkard after his fifth whiskey? Susie, you shouldn’t believe everything you hear in the street or in the pub. People like to make up things that can’t be real. This guy is not a witch-doctor or a sorcerer. No way he is.
SUSIE: Yeah, I guess you are right
(Short pause)
ELENE: Ok, so about this Tom, he is such a nice boy. I am so jealous…
(Lights out)
