Read and discuss the following extract.
Dear Dr. Malcolm:
I've been under a lot of pressure lately.
I've been working twelve to fifteen hours a day, usually alone, to get a very important job done. I'm always tired and I've been in a bad mood for most of the last month. I get angry over the most unimportant things. I used to swim for exercise, but I haven't been to a swimming-pool for months. There never seems to be any time. In fact, there doesn't seem to be any time for anything—even just enjoying myself with friends once in a while. What can I do? IT CAN'T GO ON LIKE THIS!
What are Dr. Malcolm’s concerns?
· You've been pushing yourself too hard.
· You haven't been taking very good care of yourself.
· I think your cough has been getting worse.
· You've been getting angry for no reason.
In this dialogue pay attention to the italicized words that express stress. Find other ways to say it.
S. Howard, maybe it's none of my business, but...well, you haven't been yourself lately. I mean, you've been losing your temper over nothing
H. I know. I shouldn't have blown up like that. I don't know what came over me. And it's not just here. I've been arguing with Linda and yelling at the kids.
S. Have you been doing anything besides working?
H. Not really. I haven't been getting much sleep, either. But what can I do? I've got to get this work done.
S. Well, you'd better not push yourself too hard, or you'll get sick. Then you won't be able to get anything done.
H. I'm under so much pressure. Sometimes I just feel like quitting.
S. I know how that is, Howard. I've felt like that myself. Listen, if I were you, I'd take some time off and get away for a while. You can't go on at this pace.
H. You're right. Thanks for listening, Sara. And thanks for the good advice.
S. And I'd give up coffee, too. It makes you even more nervous.
H. O.K., O.K., enough advice! (Laughs)

prevention is worth a pound of cure.
