Tips for hard-hitting PowerPoint presentations:

More presentations fail because of poor design than because of poor delivery. In fact, high quality design actually improves delivery. Slides can be a key element and a powerful tool of a solid presentation if only they are made in an appropriate way.

ü It is not advisable to use more than one background in a presentation as it

only gets the viewer distracted from the message.

ü Use a title page that excites your audience.

ü Create strong headlines on all of your slides.

ü Build up your slide step by step, using "Appear".

ü Visual aids are just only aids, that’s why they should be used to enhance a presentation, not be the presentation.

ü Keep in mind that slides are bullet points – not paragraphs, so avoid filling your slides with long text.

ü In most cases, limit each slide to two or three key points expressed as briefly as possible. Restrict the volume of information at each exposure to that which can be absorbed by both you and the audience in just a few seconds.

ü Your slides need to contain only as much information as is necessary to start the conversation, and allow you to continue it while engaging individuals in the audience with your eyes.

ü You are not there to read slides - the audience could do that quite easily for themselves. If you're reading from the screen, you're not engaging the audience. If your eyes are anywhere but in contact with a listener, the audience is actually disengaged.

ü Avoid boring bullet points by replacing them with symbols arranged in a non-linear fashion.

ü Use striking graphic depictions that keep your audiences' interest. The use of images can be one of the most effective ways to stimulate emotion and when used correctly, can really hit home a key message. An example would be – suppose you want your audience to answer the question "how big is an acre of land"?, you could put statistics up on the slide that state the numerical dimensions and square feet and hope that your audience can relate to numbers, or you could put up a photo of a football field and state "it's about the size of a football field". The impact would be completely different!

ü Well prepared presentations: a motivating and beneficial experience for everyone!

ü Finally, remember that no matter how detailed your preparation, things can still go wrong. You never know what will happen. For example, the extension cord for the projector won't be long enough, there won't be a plug or the bulb will burn out. So no matter how carefully you've prepared your visuals, always be ready to sing a cappella.
