Novaya Ladoga was founded by the Order of Peter the Great in 1704 at the same time as St. Petersburg. According to the legend, Peter I carried the first three wheel-barrels of earth for Novaya Ladoga’s landmark canals himself. 15 000 kossacks, 12 000 soldiers and 35 000 labourers worked to construct the first canal. It was finished in 1731 and bore the name of “Staraya Ladoga”. The other canals were named after Peter I. The second canal system was named “Novaya Ladoga” and was constructed in 1866. Novaya Ladoga is famous for its residents. One of them is Alexander Suvorov, one of the most prominent generals in Russian history, who lived there from 1764 till 1768, when he was commander-in-chief of the Suzdal infantry regiment. During tsarists times, Novaya Ladoga was the centre of the Volkhov River region. There lived more than 1000 people. Some of 144 houses were made of bricks. Most of the population was sea captains.
During World War II, Head Quarters of the Red Banner Ladoga Fleet was located in Novaya Ladoga. Novaya Ladoga was the beginning of famous “Road of life” connecting the beseiged city of Leningrad to the whole country. Today Novaya Ladoga is a small industrial town (population 12 000). There are a lot of enterprises: “Lacond”, Ship Repairing Workshop, Fish Processing factory and Fishing Company, Bakery “Volkhov-Khleb” and a factory producing leather bags. Novaya Ladoga has 2 comprehensive schools, 2 kindergartens, 3 libraries, a Youth Centre, Local History Museum, Tourism Centre, Music Hall and Yacht Club.
