People began to settle in the territory of the present Pskov region approximately 10-12 thousand years ago. In the first Russian Chronicle, the Pskov area is described as a Trade route from Scandinavia to Byzantium in the 11th-12th centuries. The city of Pskov has a lot of ancient Russian architectural monuments and paintings. There are about a hundred such ancient treasures within its territory. The most famous of them are the Mirozhsky monastery, the Church of Vartaan Knutynsky.
There are 14 towns and 8,143 rural settlements in the region. The population of the Pskov region is 835,000. The population density in this region is 15,1 people per km2. The city is surrounded with the fortress walls where one can see a masterpiece of ancient Russian architecture – the Kremlin.
