Лондон – столиця Великобританії. Повна назва країни – Сполучене Королівство Великобританії і Північної Ірландії. Лондон – давнє місто. Воно виросло навколо першого місця, де римські завойовники знайшли Темзу досить вузькою, щоб спорудити міст. Вони заснували маленьке кельтське поселення, пізніше відоме як Лондініум, і до 300 р.н.е. перетворили його на великий порт і важливий торговий центр.

У 61 році місто було знищено вогнем ущент, і коли воно було відбудовано, то було оточено стіною. Територія, оточена стіною, зараз має назву Сіті. Це комерційний і діловий центр Лондона. Там розташовані Англійський банк, Лондонська біржа та головні офіси багатьох фірм та корпорацій. Тут же міститься Лондонський Тауер. Його було збудовано Вільгельмом Завойовником, який захопив Англію у 1066 році. Його було короновано у Вестмінстерському абатстві. Зараз там розташована більшість урядових будинків.

Під час правління династії Тюдорів /XVI століття/ Лондон стає важливим економічним і фінансовим центром. Лондонці періоду Єлизавети побудували перші театри. Зараз район театрів розташований навколо Пікаділлі. Неподалеку можна побачити Британський музей та Королівський придворний оперний театр.

У вікторіанську добу /XIX століття/ Лондон був одним із найважливіших центрів промислової революції та центром Британської імперії.

Зараз Лондон – важливий політичний центр, великий комерційний центр, рай для театралів і туристів, але це ще й тихе місто з прекрасними парками, давніми спорудами, музеями та бібліотеками.
