Exercise 28. Turn the following passages into Reported speech, observing the rules of the sequence of tenses.

1. "Wait a moment," said he. "Are you sure that you are really fit to discuss things? I have given you a serious shock by my unnecessarily dramatic reappearance."

2. "Even if my head would go through," thought poor Alice, "it would be of very little use without my shoulders."

3. "It's the best place for him," said Dumbledore firmly. "His aunt and uncle will be able to explain everything to him when he's older.

4. "I'll eat it," said Alice, "and if it makes me grow larger, I can reach the key; and if it makes me grow smaller, I can creep under the door; so either way I'll get into the garden, and I don't care which happens!"

5. "You may or may not have just cause for arresting me," said he, "but at least there can be no reason why I should submit to the gibes of this person."

6. The stranger replied, "That is why, I suppose, you wished him to go on to Bukovina. You cannot deceive me, my friend. I know too much, and my horses are swift."

7. "It is true," Holmes answered. "Up to a certain point he did well. He was always a man of iron nerve, and the story is still told in India how he crawled down a drain after a wounded man-eating tiger."

8. Then he rose and said, "But you must be tired. Your bedroom is all ready, and tomorrow you shall sleep as late as you will. I have to be away till the afternoon, so sleep well and dream well!"

10. "Today's your birthday," sneered Dudley. "How come you haven't got any cards? Haven't you even got friends at that place? "

11. "You may go anywhere you wish in the castle, except where the doors are locked, where of course you will not wish to go. There is reason that all things are as they are," said Dracula.

12. "What's been going on?" said Ron. "Why haven't you been answering my letters? I've asked you to stay about twelve times, and then Dad came home and said you'd got an official warning for using magic. "

13. "Well, Ned,” said I, “is it possible that you are not convinced of the existence of this cetacean that we are following? Have you any particular reason for being so incredulous?"

14. "You have convinced me of one thing, sir, which is that, if such animals do exist at the bottom of the seas, they must necessarily be as strong as you say,” said Ned.

15. "I'm glad we came to get you, anyway,” said Ron. “I was getting really worried when you didn't answer any of my letters."

16. "Undoubtedly,” replied the captain, “if it possesses such dreadful power, it is the most terrible animal that ever was created. That is why, sir, I must be on my guard.”

17. "That treasure has been hidden," he went on, "in the region through which you came last night, there can be but little doubt."

18. "Arthur and I have been worried about you, too," she assured Harry. "Just last night we were saying we'd come and get you ourselves if you hadn't written back to Ron by Friday."

19. "If master were to tell our story, "said Conseil, "perhaps these gentlemen may understand some words."

20. "Wish I knew what he was up to, "said Fred, frowning. “He's not himself. His exam results came the day before you did."
