(Dongfang Mingzhu Guangbo Dianshi Ta; 5879 1888; 8am-10pm; Lujiazui) Love it or hate it, it’s hard to be indifferent to this 468m-tall poured-concrete tripod tower. Sucking in a vortex of visitors, the Deng Xiaoping–era design is inadvertently retro (1950s atom age or thereabouts), but socialism with Chinese characteristics was always cheesy in those days. The tower is dazzling when illuminated at night: toast the big bauble with a cocktail on the terrace at Flair (Click here) for the best visuals. You can join the long queues for high-rise views of Shanghai, but there are better views elsewhere. For sightseeing, the tower stands out most for its excellent Shanghai History Museum, in the basement. The tower’s long lines are matched by a tortuous ticketing system.
Boat tours on the Huangpu River operate from the Pearl Dock Offline map Google map (Mingzhu Matou; 1 Century Ave), next to the tower.
