Museums, Restaurants & Shops

The heart of the complex, divided into a pedestrianised north and south block, consists of largely rebuilt traditional shikumen houses, brought bang up-to-date with a stylish modern spin. (For more on shikumen Click here.) But while the layout suggests a flavour of yesteryear, you should not expect much in the cultural realm. Xintiandi doesn’t deliver any of the lived-in charm of the Tianzifang or the creaking, rickety simplicity of the Old Town. Beyond the two sights located in the North Block – the Shikumen Open House Museum (Click here) and the Site of the 1st National Congress of the CCP (Click here) – it’s best for strolling the prettified alleyways and enjoying a summer evening over drinks or a meal.

Serious shoppers – and diners – will eventually find their way to the malls at the southern tip of the South Block. Beyond the first, which holds three top-notch restaurants on the 2nd floor (Din Tai Fung, Click here; Crystal Jade, Click here; and Shanghai Min, Click here), is the newly constructed mall Xintiandi Style, showcasing local brands at the vanguard of Shanghainese fashion.
