(Fuyou Gongyipin Shichang; 459 Middle Fangbang Rd; 459 Yuyuan Garden) There’s a permanent antique market here on the 1st and 2nd floors, but the place really gets humming for the ‘ghost market’ on Sunday at dawn, when sellers from the countryside fill up all four floors and then some. The range is good, but there’s a lot of junk, so you need a shrewd eye if you don’t want to pay too much over the odds.

Offline map Google map (Lao Jie; Middle Fangbang Rd; Yuyuan Garden) A renovated Qing-dynasty stretch of Fangbang Rd lined with specialist tourist shops, this is an excellent place for souvenirs and vendors are less pushy than at Yuyuan Bazaar. Shops spill forth with shadow puppets, jade jewellery, embroidered fabrics, old illustrated books and calligraphy manuals, kites, horn combs, chopsticks, zisha teapots, old poster advertisements, bank notes, Tibetan jewellery, the usual knock-off Mao trash, repro 1930s posters and surreal three-dimensional dazzle photos of kittens.
